Dynasty Trade Help

Here is a fanpost from a reader that I thought would stimulate some conversation. It's a decison to trade for help this year vs. passing up the future potential of Stephen Strasburg.

Don't normally look for advice on this stuff but here goes.  My team had a rough year last season, so I find myself with the #1 overall pick this year which is presumably a ticket to Stephen Strasburg.

The trade offered is:  Alex Rodriguez, Grady Sizemore, Chad Billingsley for Hanley Ramirez & Stephen Strasburg

I'm inclined to stay put with Hanley and SS but realize the bust potential (this season) is enormous.  Am I passing up anything too good to say no to?

What's the dropoff?

Who plays SS for you if you move Hanley? And who gets moved out of your lineup with the other three?

I was trying to keep it simple. It’s not technically a dynasty league. You keep 10 guys so there’s aspects of dynasty. All incoming guys would make their way into my lineup as my current 8-10 keepers are lame.

Hanley plays UTIL for me. ARod would do the same. My roster still has Rollins (SS), MCabrera (1B/3B) & Youkilis (1B/3B).

make the deal

you have to jump on that deal. Strasburg will probably be called up in June, and Billz should rebound this season. a full season of Arod and a healthy Sizemore is alot to pass up.

I wouldnt do it

Bills coming back strong is no sure thing and the key player your adding is another guy coming off injury at the deepest hitting spot. Id rather Keep HanRam for pos and age sake then add Sizemore. Bills for Stras seems like a tossup

position scarcity?

he has Rollins at SS as well. You can’t pass up two very good players for Hanley due to position scarcity. As I wrote awhile back, fantasy owners place too much emphasis on position scarcity.

I dont normally

its just a small thing Id care about the age diff much more then the position. Im also not sure how much Id really want to see Rollins as my starting and only SS. Inless he has a good fall back..

There’s no fallback to Rollins. For the past two seasons I’ve had the luxury/curse of playing Hanley and Jimmy at SS & UTIL. The luxury is that they’re two nice players but the curse is never being able to easily flex a hot bat into the UTIL spot.

Didn’t expect this much attention on this - I’ll be sure to follow up with the outcome when it unfolds.

Id also note

older top players can be really hard to get fair value for in a dynasty league. Arod getting very close to be stuck on your team in less you willing to sell low. I wouldnt give up arguable the most valuable player and most valuable prospect for an aging star and two unsure guys coming off injury/bad seasons.

Flags fly forever

Strasburg “may” be the next big thing…..

But to get three all stars for Hanram? I pull the trigger.
A-rod in that park….. even with his age getting up there he’s a good bet for 40 homers
Sizemore is due for a rebound Billingsley too

If Sizemore and Billingsley are concerns… find a third owner you could move either of them to… then you could get another young player with upside.

I’d take that deal. You’re gaining proven talent and risking one proven player and a prospect with arm concerns.

I'd take that trade...

You get 3 really good stars for HanRam and Strassburg. I know HanRam is a very good player, and Strassburg may be the best thing since sliced bread, but I would pull the trigger on that trade. Even if you have another rough season, and you’re in a dynasty league, you could trade some of the guys you acquired for good prospects.
