Keeper League Trade?

Disclaimer:  This one will be fairly long.

Star-divide

I am in a 15 team mixed keeper league with a $300 cap.  We start 23 players and have 17 reserves, so rosters run pretty deep.

Injuries have been killing me.  I have Zimmerman, Hamilton and Hughes all on reserve right now (no DL slots).  With James McDonald underperforming, he is on reserve as well.  I also have both Belt and Sands sitting on reserve, but due to the structure of the league I would prefer keeping them there all year.

My pitching has been killing me.  I have by far the best offense in the league, but keep in mind that this league is VERY active... so I am sure a competitor will make a few moves and improve his offense to what mine is.  I have been offered the following:

Josh Hamilton for Jonathan Sanchez

Both have the same salary, which does make this a bit less complicated.  My OF without Hamilton is Kemp, J Upton, Cruz, Tabata and Markakis, with Berkman at Utility (Berkman also qualifies at 1B and CI, and I will move him there when Hamilton gets off the DL and replace either Ka'aihue or Jose Lopez).

My 9 pitchers currently active are: Kershaw, Verlander, Brett Anderson, Colby Lewis, Ervin Santana, Brian Wilson, Neftali Feliz and Jordan Walden.  Hughes and McDonald have done a great job destroying my ratios in the early going, and Lewis has not helped either.

Do you do this kind of deal?  Good news is I would be dealing from a position of strength and probably could use another SP.  At the same time though, I could also just wait until June 1 when our salary cap increases and go acquire someone like Sanchez.  Both Hamilton and Sanchez are at $21, and would be $24 to keep in 2012.  Needless to say, Hamilton has the better keeper value.  My OF will be stacked even without him, as all my OFs are cheap right now.

Another option, with the same owner, would be to acquire Ricky Romero instead of Hamilton.  Romero would have more keeper value, as his salary is only $10.

Thoughts?

Poll
Should I deal Hamilton? If so, should I get Sanchez or Romero?

I wouldn't

I wouldn’t trade any of your outfielders for Sanchez. The Romero deal is a bit better because of the price but even then it’s not a fair deal. Just cause you are dealing from a strength doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get a fair deal. You should be getting a top pitcher for Hamilton not a middle of the pack guy.

you have an OF of...

Hamilton, Kemp, J Upton, Cruz, Tabata and Markakis?

What, were people drunk when they drafted?

It's a keeper league

I have collected these guys over time. I picked up Upton, Kemp and Cruz before they ever broke into the bigs. I just traded an expensive Reyes for Markakis and grabbed Tabata for some prospects in this past offseason.

You have to keep in mind this league has been in existence for 15 years.

deal

you should get a much better SP for Hamilton. I agree with Jeremy….especially considering he is very cheap at $21

ummmm
you should get a much better SP for Hamilton

actually, seeing that Hamilton will be out for the next 5 weeks, getting ANYONE of value for him would be a steal. Now, if he were Healthy, he could get an ace for Hamilton, but that If, in the immortal words of Gray, “has its own gravitational pull”.

there is no sense trading away one of the game’s better hitters cause he is out 5 weeks. Getting ANYONE would not be a steal. Unless you get full value for him you’re short changing yourself.

it’s like saying the Rangers should trade him for anyone cause he’s out 5 weeks.

+1

agree completely. Keeper Leagues are a different beast, and it actually sounds like this may be a Dynasty League.

I would make it very clear to people in trades that if you are going to pay the price for holding onto Hamilton while he is on the DL, that as soon as he is healthy he will be much more expensive. I know that sounds pretty obvious. But if you can intensify the bidding between the other teams it will only help your cause. Once Hamilton is back, if you still have him- trade him for a top 2 round type pick. I don’t recall Hamilton being a top 5 pick or so, but mainly because of the health concerns. I think if he is healthy and playing around the All Star break his value will be very high as that’s when other teams are trying to finalize the pieces for a run. So either get decent value for him now or trade him once he’s healthy. Otherwise you’ll be having this health issue with Hamilton a lot.

No thanks

Hamilton is too valuable to trade for a (fantasy-wise) mediocre started like Sanchez or Romero. Either keep Hamilton or wait for a stud pitcher offer
