Stephen Strasburg: Is He Worth a Draft?
I was hoping that I was going to be able to pick up Stephen Strasburg in my fantasy baseball league this summer. However, that was not the case as he was not ever available in my league. I do expect him to be available on draft day and with all the talk of him being "better than A.J. Burnett" do you guys think it is worth it to draft him? I know it was Strasburg's agent, Scott Boras, who said that, but everyone knows how good his tools are. If you would draft him, high manyh rounds do you think he would pass by? What round would you be willing to draft him in?

it depends on what type of league you play in. If mixed, I am sure you can get him in the later rounds with so many good and established pitchers available. If NL-only, I would say you could take him in the 8th-10th rounds if you really believe he will be special this year.
This of course goes out the window should he dominate in spring training and the Strasburg love-fest begins again.
He will be more valuable in 5×5 leagues than 4×4 leagues due to the strikeouts. The wins may be hard to come by in Washington though.

Draft
Regardless where Strasburg starts 2010, he is going to be drafted in all formats - overdrafted in non-keeper ones. He will be drafted but don’t rush to grab in in the 1st half of the draft.

My league was a 5x5 mixed H2H
but I wanted to see what everyone else thinks. Do you guys even think he will make an appearance in the majors in 2010? If you had him on your team ,and somebody wanted to acquire him in a trade, what would you ask for in return? I wonder what Strasburg’s fantasy value will be.

I would think he plays. He’s getting paid too much not to, and he’s on a bad team with ticket sales problems.
If I somehow had him and someone wanted to trade for him, I’d put it on the other guy to offer me something. Often times when I trade, I feel bad about my offers and I think I sell myself short. If another player wants him, I’d want that player to “show me” how much they want him.

Strasburg
I would be surprised if he didn’t pitch in the majors in 2010. He’s the Nats best pitcher right now. I wouldn’t trade him right now. I would wait till the hype machines get rolling in Feb/Mar before drafts start.

Personally, I’ll be drafting him, but it’ll have to be at a point where I don’t have to rely on him to be a consistent producer on a weekly basis. If the hype is big for him, I can see him being drafted in the area of Wandy Rodriguez, Jered Weaver, Scott Kazmir and Gavin Floyd and I think I may take them over him at that point. If we’re talking keeper leagues, I may draft him a little earlier but people forget that he hasn’t faced a major league hitter yet.
To put it in simpler terms, I will not be drafting him expecting him to be better than A.J. Burnett, but I also won’t be avoiding him.

HECKKKKKKKKKK NAH!
Only because he will go much higher than he’s worth. Look at Matt Weiters and Cam Maybin last year.
Would I take him after most of my team is filled? For sure!
Would I take him over a reliable veteran? No way!
Could he turn out to be all that and then some? Sure, but I’m not going to waste the spot to try to find out.

As example, my main league
we have a minors draft immediately after our draft. I would take him 2nd in that (first pick, i’m going Heyword). Currently, he’s the 2nd best prospect in baseball, and I’d say he’s going to go in Weiters territory from last year (anywhere from the 10th-12th in mixed, higher in L-only leagues).
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

Be prepared to wait if you draft Strasburg
because the Nationals will likely try to delay his arbitration clock by pitching him at Triple-A until mid- or late-June.
