Pitching

There is an interesting dynamic on Fridays slate; you have Jacob deGrom ($11,800) on the road in Miami and Corey Kluber ($11,200) on the road against the Tigers. You have Carlos Martinez ($9,900) at home against the Pirates and Collin McHugh ($9,000) home against the Twins.  James Shields ($8,800) is at home against the Dodgers, Jake Odorizzi (8,700) is on the road against the Yankees and you also have Luis Severino at home against the Rays.

Let me ask you a question; of the seven pitchers listed above, with a minimum of 20 innings pitched, which one had the best month of August?

If you said Odorizzi than you would be correct.

Odorizzi has an interesting Friday night matchup with the Yankees who over the past month have a 21 percent strikeout rate with a .151 ISO and wRC+ of 95. Odorizzi is striking hitters out at a 9 per nine innings rate with less than 2 walks and 1 bomb per nine with a 3.63 xFIP. Odorizzi could be a good play Friday.

McHugh has an interesting matchup at home against the Twins. The Twins have been a huge disappointment over the past month striking out 23 percent of the time with a .167 ISO and wRC+ of 91. McHugh has been striking out hitters at a clip of 9.57 per nine with just over 3 walks and less than a bomb per nine and a 3.58 xFIP. He's definitely worthy of consideration on Friday.

The third best pitcher of the seven is Martinez. The Pirates have a 22 percent strikeout rate against righties on the road and with Martinez striking out nearly 9 hitters per 9 with less than 2 walks and 1 bomb allowed per nine plus a solid 3.21 xFIP makes me have to at least consider Martinez. Martinez at home against the Pirates is a very good value play on Friday.

The fourth best pitcher out of the six listed for the month of August is Severino. He has an interesting matchup on Friday against the Rays. While the Rays have had a terrific August that team struggles with righties striking out at a 21.5 percent rate. Their .139 ISO and wRC+ of 93 shouldn't be much of a match against Severino's 9 strikeouts per nine, less than 4 walks and 1 bomb allowed per nine with a 3.58 xFIP for the month of August.

I would probably try and avoid Shields on Friday. He gets the strikeouts (9 per 9 innings) but his near 4.00 xFIP makes me nervous as do the Dodgers as you never know which Dodger team will show up. Why go through any extra stress if you don't have too?

If you want to spend the money than Kluber and deGrom are definitely worthy of their humungous price tags. Both Kluber (Tigers) and deGrom (Marlins) are on the road so if I had a choice between the two then I think you could go either way with this; they both will get their strikeouts but the Mets will probably score enough runs to make deGrom a winner on Friday.

Value Picks for Friday Evening.

Josh Phegley ($2,900) is moderately priced and has hit a couple of bombs on the road against lefties this season. Over the month of August Phegley has a .167 ISO and wRC+ of 101.

Todd Frazier ($2,300) has a decent matchup with the Brewers Matt Garza and at this price it's hard to pass up on a guy who has launched 3 bombs and has a lifetime 1.170 OPS against Garza.

Adam Jones ($3,000) is priced so low it's hard to pass him by. His matchup with Drew Hutchison is interesting in that he's struck out 6 times but has a bomb and 3 RBI. 18 of Jones 24 bombs this season have come against righties with half of them coming on the road in 2015.
