History, for those of you over 18
OK, so I'm in a super-well-informed, deep, long-term keeper league, members of which are well-known names. We pride ourselves on scouting top young talent, and there is often a good premium paid for youth, based on our keeper rules, which value a breakout over a slow learning curve.
I would like you guys to chime in on a trade that happened a few years ago in our league, simply because it was a fairly controversial trade at the time, but it also involved a very famous member of our league and I'd like to know if you think our resident celebrity got a bit of a star-stroke in this one.
Trade was: Bryce Harper for Troy Tulowitzki, Nelson Cruz, and Justin Verlander.
Now, this happened two years ago, after Verlander had been having a poor year, Cruz was still a bit of an unknown, but had followed up his callup with a great early season, and Tulo was pretty much being Tulo.
Bryce Harper has cost his new owner exactly zero as a keeper (unlimited keepers, based on points accrued), but is this trade in any way worth it? The guy (famous rock star, constantly on tour) who gave away Harper has won the league since the trade, and always finishes near the top. The guy trading for Harper has not finished in the top half recently.
This trade has generated insane amounts of talk in our league, I'm wondering what outside opinions might be. It's been two years or more, and I still think giving up this amount for Bryce Harper was insane, but there was probably no other way to pry him away from the owner who drafted him at AGE 14!!!.

well
first off I have to figure out how to get into fantasy leagues that not only have famous rockstars but are also very competative. Second I can’t really comment on the trade seeing as I don’t know the full rules of your league. Obviously the guy who dealt the three major contributors for Harper is pissed at himself, but at the same time, if the guy was in no position to win for a few years, Harper is perfect to build for the future especially since his first big year he will probably not cost anything in terms of keeper points. I approach keeper leagues with the goal of winning it all at some point. I dont feel a need to put out the best team I can each year if doing so impedes my eventual shot at a championship

This is my strategy, too
I finished in the bottom 3 in this league my first 4 years, but it was all part of a long-term plan which has come to fruition this year, and I’m right in the hunt to win it all. Since I joined as an expansion team, I pretty much had to build from the ground up, and trying to win it all too early would have probably resulted in consistent decent finishes, but no championships, whereas basically tanking for 4 years and stockpiling prospects has resulted in a very good team and the ability to trade off top prospects for the necessary pieces for a championship run.
With that in mind, I still think this trade was extraordinarily lopsided. I mean, you’re trading three definite keeper-level stars for one kid who was 16 at the time. I just can’t see the justification. But, our resident star does seem to get a bit of the star treatment in trades a lot of the time.

Well...
I’ve traded away most of my top prospects this year in an attempt to win it all (champ this year, who needs next year?), so right now I’m burdened with several pitching prospects (NO SUCH THING!): Tyler Skaggs, Jarrod Parker, and Mike Montgomery. Was going to pick up
Carlos Martinez (Matias) about a month ago, but he was snaked right ahead of me in our bi-weekly FA draft. No big deal, pitching prospects are just roster filler, unless you have a major stud.
As far as position-players, I just double-checked my roster to see if it was, in fact, this bleak, and, yes…I’ve got Michael Taylor, LF, OAK. And that’s it. Christ. I don’t even like Michael Taylor, he’s just become a grudging project of mine and I’m irrationally unwilling to let him go. HE’S GONNA SURPRISE EV’RYONE, I TELLS YA!
A more interesting story would be who I’ve traded this year, prospect-wise:
Eric Hosmer for Carl Crawford and Hunter Pence: generated a lot of talk, but the guy I traded with was already out of the race in mid-May, and Crawford was sucking air back then. League consensus is that I got the better end for this year, he got the better end for the future, which is exactly what we both wanted. Crawford is probably a keeper, Pence is borderline; he seems to be kept every other year or so, but traded a lot within the league. Hosmer is a future HOFer, book it.
Wil Myers and Kendrys Morales for Chase Utley and Matt Joyce: Another out-of-the-hunt team looking to next year. I, personally, LOVE Wil Myers, and think his bad AA year is a fluke, and I’m royally screwed at 1B (have been every year in this league) by trading away Morales, but this was kind of a no-brainer. I hate the Phillies, but Utley is a stud. Matt Joyce, on the other hand, is my freaking albatross. He puts up numbers on my bench, and sucks butts when I start him. I’m considering writing him a letter in hopes of eventually getting the two of us on the same page. I expected a downturn, but not a vicious, pointed screwing like I’ve gotten.
Devin Mesoraco for Mariano Rivera: I hate this trade. The guy I traded with (incidentally, the same guy who gave up the kitchen sink for Bryce Harper) loved Mesoraco and I didn’t take full advantage. I feel like I could have gotten more. But I’m LOADED at catcher, with Miguel Montero, JP Arencibia, Mike Napoli, and some other schmuck I can’t even remember, and I had some room to give regarding saves in our league (you don’t get points for total team saves in excess of wins). Maybe I’m just pissed right now because Mo has had a uniquely awful week, I dunno, but I really should have pressed the issue here. This was his first offer, and I, as a rule, never accept first offers unless they’re outrageous, but he’s a friend and I was weak for a moment. Whatever.
I just had Goldschmidt called up, so that’s a prospy that I was holding for a minute (traded Mat Latos for him back in May, one day after the Hosmer trade, I was having 1B prospect withdrawal. I’m trying to get Latos back for the stretch run.) Elvis Andrus is a long-term project that has paid out nicely, so far. I had Austin Jackson for 3 years before last year and had to tearfully cut him this last offseason. Carlos Gonzalez is probably my top project-prospect in terms of payoff, I drafted him right after he escaped Oakland; he had been dropped immediately after being traded from the Arizona system to the awful muck that is the A’s farm system - also known as “How To Ruin a Young Player 101.” HellBoy, Ogando, and Hanson are also pet projects who have paid huge dividends, though all of them are currently boning me with innings limits.
Like I said, I’ve traded away pretty much everyone who is a future star for guys that can contribute right now, which has been my strategy. But if I miss the championship this year, I could very well be screwed for next year. My current offseason plan is to trade EVERY stud I have (Weaver, Utley, Pedroia, CarGo, Pence, etc.) for prospects and have my keeper team cost me almost no points (each team gets a set number of keeper points based on their finish in the previous season. each player’s point value is their total point value from the last season. Weaver could easily be a 700 point player, just like Bautista was last year. Bautista was actually dropped bc his point value was so high and his owner didn’t feel like he had any chance of giving a return-on-investment anywhere close to that. he was wrong), and then using my massive point surplus in next year’s waiver draft to basically take whomever I want (we have a draft before our regular draft in which unused keeper points can be used to draft any pointing player from the previous year. prospects, at 0 points, cannot be taken, nor can negative-pointing players. this means that I would have basically unlimited access to every player not on a keeper roster, in advance of our regular draft).
Um, this is becoming a thesis. I have to stop now.

Why do we have to be over 18?
That guy really shot himself in the foot for doing that trade

Adults
Mostly I was hoping your little friend below wouldn’t feel the need to impose his ludicrous opinion on my thread, but reading comprehension isn’t exactly his strong suit so I guess it’s my fault for giving him too much credit.
And I agree with you, I simply can’t find a justification for this trade. The guy that got Harper is a friend of mine, and a great guy, and his justification was (and remains), “I really wanted Bryce Harper. Piss off.” Hard to argue with that. But the other guy has kept Verlander, Cruz, and Tulo every year since, and has won the league once and finished 2nd twice, no doubt owing in large part to their contributions. I just can’t see Bryce Harper, even if he is the Second Coming of Babe Ruth (he’s not) carrying a team like that. But, he’s a sexy prospect to own, and if that’s your thing, then I guess you do what it takes to own him. I’m still irritated that he was picked up in our league at age 14 (before he was even allowed to post in this thread!!!). Seriously? I have to go that deep? Ugh.

Right now that trade makes zero sense
But at the time, Verlander had his crap season. His ERA was close to 5 in over 200 IP and he had 17 loses. And Nelson cruz had never had a season where he hit more than 9 homeruns, and was currently a bench player at the time, then came his breakout in 09. And the previous season that the trade happend, tulo had 8 homers, 46 rbis, and a .263 avg. At the time, that trade didnt look AS dumb as now, but it was still a lopsided as hell trade.

um, i really feal like this was some way to brag to everyone.
what was the point of telling us their is somebody famous in your league. who cares?
and if your gonna do that, why would you not say the persons name. i call shenagans on the famous person part. but either way i could care less. no reason to put that their is a famous person in your league their.
secondly if the guy is always finishing at the top of his league. then this trade will be good fro him in a few years.
no doubt he lost the trad. but its not a team killing trae if he is always finishing at the top of the league, and he basically keeps harper for free
