ICYMI – The NBA Draft was full of trades

The NHL draft, not so much.

NBA: NBA Draft Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

With a few major events behind us now – NBA and NHL seasons, the US Open, the major horse races, the French Open, we had a weekend full of drafts, World Cup games, some college baseball as well as some Boxing and MMA matches to watch.

NBA (Deandre Ayton drafted first overall)

· The Suns too Deandre while the Kings grabbed Marvin Bagley and the Dallas Mavericks moved up to grab Luka Doncic at third overall

· The Dallas traded with Atlanta who moved down to the number five selection taking Trae Young

· Michael Porter Jr. fell to 14 where the Denver Nuggets drafted him

· Plenty of trades occurring in the first round with the 76ers, Suns, Mavericks, Hawks, Hornets, Clippers all making first round picks involving Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Miles Bridges, Zhaire Smith, Mikeal Brides, Trae Young and Luka Doncic

World Cup (half way through group phase)

· Russia, England and Croatia all currently as 2-0 with a 5 goal differential.

· Poland, Panama and Saudi Arabia all at 0-2with a -5 goal differential

· Argentina is in danger at 0-1-1 currently with a -3 goal differential

Updates here

NHL (Rasmus Dahlin drafted first overall)

· The Sabres drafted Dahlin, the Hurricanes got Andrei Svechnikov and the Canadiens drafted Jesperi Kotkainiemi for the top three picks

· Joe Veleno slipped to #30 where the Detroit Red Wings drafted him and Noah Dobson slipped to #12 where the New York Islanders drafted him.

· Five Swedish defenseman taken in the first round.

· The first goalie was drafted at 39th overall (no goalie has been selected in the top 10 picks since Carey Price went to Montreal in 2005).

MLB (46% of the way into the season)

· If you want an interesting MLB standings topic in the NL we are on pace to see some combination of Cubs, Nationals and/or Dodgers in the NL Wild Card play in game and either Boston or NY Yankees will be in that wild card game for the AL.

· Mike Trout doing Mike Trout things – 10 runs, 9 RBI’s batting .486 with a .623 OBP and .838 SLG over his last two weeks.

· Trevor Bauer has now struck out at least 10 batters in his last five out of six games. (91% owned).

PGA – Bubba Watson wins third title of the year

· Bubba made a six shot deficit and then some on Sunday to earn the win.

· A four way tie in 2nd place at -14 between Stewart Cink, Beau Hossler, JB Holmes and Paul Casey

WNBA

· Minnesota Lynx climbing up the standings with four consecutive wins outscoring their opponents by 48 points over that time.

· Diani Taurasi moving up the PPG rankings, sits at second with 20.2 PPG.

· VERY interesting article about wage gap in WNBA in relation to NBA (as a percentage of total revenue received). It is estimated that WNBA players receive 21.5% of league revenues vs. NBA players who receive close to 50% of league revenues (with many refs being paid more than the players). The main variable I want to see is how much fixed operational costs are (stadium and otherwise), after that it should be an apples to apples comparison.

NASCAR – Martin Truex Jr. wins at Sonoma

· Martin Truex Jr. holds comfortable lead, up 20 seconds over second place Kevin Harvick. He prompted Harvick to go to pit row earlier in the race by pretending to stop but continuing to race

· Cole White had an accident, Ryan Blaney had steering issues, Cody Ware had a fuel pump issue, Jamie McMurray had an oil pump issue and AJ Allmendinger had engine issues as four of them did not finish the race in a no accident run at Sonoma.

MMA – UFC Fight Night: Cowboy vs. Edwards

· Leon Edwards won in unanimous decision over Donald Cerrone through 5 rounds (Welterweight)

· Ovince Saint-Preux beat Tyson Pedro via submission in the first round in the Light Heavyweight

· Jessica Eye beat Jessica-Rose Clark by decision through 3 rounds in the Women’s Flyweight

· Li Jingliang beat Daichi Abe by decision through 3 rounds in the Women’s Welterweight

Boxing

· Miguel Berchelt KO’d Jonathan Victor Barros in the third round to retain Junior Lightweight Title

· Vergil Ortiz Jr. also had a third round KO over Carlos Salgado

· Martin Murray won in points over Roberto Garcia in middleweight

College

· The Mens Baseball Finals are underway – Oregon State vs. Arkansas

· Five of the last 10 CWS champions (and six of the ten runners up) have come from the SEC
