Closer Report

The season is here, well we have to wait 2 more days, but you get the gist. One good piece of news is that no one else went to visit Mr. Andrews. This first week is very wonky. Some people counted those games in Japan some didn't. At most you have 4 games to round out your week one schedule. If you wrapping around then you could have as many as 10. See what I said about it being wonky. Next Monday all will return to normal or some shape or form of normalcy. Here are some week 1 extended news and rankings for the guys who don't start the game but will help close it out.

  • Andrew Bailey is dealing with a thumb ailment. It would be presumed that Mark Melancon would jump up and grab the reigns, not so fast Mark. Afredo Aceves has been tabbed by some media outlets as the guy most likely to garner save chances should Bailey's hitchhiker tool be DL'd. It is a grab both situation at the moment.
  • Frank Francisco has looked very sluggish to date this year, had his knee drained and going for a precautionary MRI. Bobby Parnell is now in the "ooh look at me I can close" category. Jon Rauch's neck tattoo had no comment.
  • Drew Storen threw a good bullpen session on Sunday and reported he felt fine. He has only thrown 2 innings in games and will almost certainly start the year on DL. H-Rod and Lidge are end game options here for the Nats.
  • Nothing new to report for the Reds. No closer has been named as Dusty Baker's fantasy draft isn't until Tuesday so he has time to screw everything up. Marshall, Chapman, Marge Schott's ghost all should be rostered.

Where is Addison Reed? I don’t see him on either saves or holds list. Isn’t he too good not to be on the holds list at least?

I couldn't imagine a Dusty Baker fantasy drafted team

Down 2 in the bottom of the ninth?

Should Vinnie Pestano be included in one of the Hold tiers?

Pestano

See Reed, Addison.

It's my understanding that Marshall will be the Reds closer

Reds still see Chapman as a starting pitcher….I think this bullpen move is temporary until Bill Bray and Nick Masset get back to full health, and one of the starting pitchers stumbles (Bailey?) or gets hurt.

Agreed

For all intents and purposes Marshall is the defacto closer, but Dusty won’t decide on him as the full time guy and doesn’t want him pitching in more than 3 games in a row. Yadda yadda yadda.

Marshall dubbed CL

AND Chapman to the pen. As someone who bid 31faab on Marshall I am still nervous as hell with Chapman seting up.

With the Beckett injury

it is possible that Aceves might start the year in the rotation. This of course would mean that Melancon would once again be slotted into the closer’s role.

by Nnamdi Asomugha on Apr 2, 2026 6:00 PM EDT reply actions

Aceves

Valentine said that they were just going to move the rotation around and push Beckett’s start back a day if necessary. Aceves is the jack-of-all trades guy in the being held together by masking tape bullpen in Boston.

UPDATE

Bailey may require surgery on his thumb. If you haven’t put your claims in for Melancon or Aceves yet you can do so now with more assurance.

Brothers ...

As far as holds go, I’m pretty high on Rex Brothers from Colorado. I’d put him on the high side of Tier 3.

I have Bailey and want to drop. Who would be a good replacement? I already have B.Wilson, and H.Bell

Don’t know who is available but Joel Peralta looks like a winner right now with the Farns going on the shelf
