10 players I am DEFINITELY grabbing if I am the Seattle Kraken

One player from each team makes up the newest edition to the NHL.

The draft is tonight and Seattle hopes to replicate the success that Las Vegas had in their draft and subsequent deep run in their first season as a franchise. There will definitely be some jockeying, trades, discussion and moves to protect certain players. If you removed all of that noise, below are 10 players that, for the cost and value they would provide to a new team, I would select as GM of Seattle.

  1. Anaheim Ducks: Haydn Fleury, D ($1.3MM). Solid defensive player who is young and showed a real strong push through the later half of last season. The Ducks thrive on a strong defensive posture and he had the opportunity to learn a thing or two during the later part of the season, not to mention some strong analytics from his previous team, the Hurricanes.
  2. Boston Bruins: Jeremy Lauzon, D ($900k). Young defensive player who is showing promise to be a top 4 player down the road. Not overly productive on offense but he is solid in blocking shots and playing physical on defense.
  3. Colorado Avalanche: Gabriel Landeskog, LW (free agent). This one is a gamble, but if you can shell out some big dollars and keep him on you have captainship qualities and a potential captain to lead your team with grit going into Day 1.
  4. Minnesota Wild: Kaapo Kahkonen, G ($725k). Make the Wild regret keeping Cam and leaving this young talented goalie available.
  5. Nashville Predators: Calle Jarnkrok, LW ($2MM cap hit). Decent power play skills, good two-way player and fairly reliable in terms of staying healthy.
  6. New York Islanders: Josh Bailey, C ($5MM cap hit). The Islanders have made a treasure trove in building and developing players who, as Rodney Dangerfield would put it, don’t get the respect they deserve. Josh is one of these players. 35 points in 54 games might not be a repeatable pace on the new team, but he provides some good play along with the points.
  7. Ottawa Senators: Evgenii Dadonov, RW ($5MM cap hit). A goal scorer at $5MM will help bolster a roster that will be in need of his skills. Three seasons of 25+ goals would bring some age and experience to the team.
  8. Tampa Bay Lightning Ondrej Palat, LW ($5MM). Two time Stanley Cup winning winger who put up 46 points in 55 games last season. Done and done.
  9. Vancouver Canucks, Zack MacEwen, C ($900k). Consider this my sleeper pick. There is nothing elite about him but he does a lot of little things right that really help out a team. He can fire the puck quickly, he backchecks, he skates hard and he will fight for the puck. I think he’s a deal at his cost for the intangible value he brings to teams.
  10. Winnipeg Jets: Derek Forbort, D (Free Agent). One of the better defensive defensemen, he provides a strong and stable anchor in the back to help protect whoever is in net for your team. If the cost is right, he could help the Kraken on the back end.
