Track
Road America. This is another among the new sets of road races introduced to us in 2021. The 4 mile asphalt circuit was originally opened in 1955, located in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Turns 5, 9 and 10 are doozies, inverting more than 90 degrees. Look for racers to mimic a similar aggressive turns and diligent acceleration and braking on this track. This track held just one cup series race over 60 years ago.
Favorites
Joey Logano (fourth selection this year) – While I would give Chase the ultimate title, Joey has been the most dominant in road racing this season. I think he is a top five lock for this race pending no accidents.
Alex Bowman (fourth selection this year) — Alex is currently 11th in cup series points and he was among the top 10 at Daytona and Circuits of the Americas races this season. He also has top 10 finishes in six of his last seven races.
High Risk/High Reward
Chris Buescher (fifth selection this year) — I have been pleasantly surprised by Chris’s step forward this year. Currently sitting in a playoff spot, he has vaulted himself up with no wins, just three top 10 finishes but minimal 30+ finishes. He has a good chance to land among the top 15 with two road top 15’s already under his belt.
Michael McDowell (fourth selection this year). Michael has top 10 finishes at two road races this year in Daytona and Circuits of America. He also has top 20 finishes in five of his last six but just one top 10. I feel like he can yield well but I’m not sure if he’s a top 10 finisher.
The Dark Horse
AJ Allmendinger (first selection this year) – AJ has been lights out during two of the earlier road races this season, finishing 7th at Daytona and 5th at Circuits of America. Well worth the long shot to see if the trend can continue.
Fun Fact: This is the first race here since 1956.
