Fantasy football 12-team, PPR mock draft: Picking #7 overall

Mocking a fantasy football draft with the 7th overall pick.

With fantasy drafts ever present in the not too distant future, I want to start running a few mock drafts here on Fake Teams and see how things are playing out currently. It’s one thing to write and read a bunch of fantasy football content and rankings, it’s a whole other thing to actually get in the thick of a draft.

I plan on doing a few of these over the coming weeks using FantasyPros’ mock draft platform. This is a PPR, 12-team snake draft for those keeping track at home.

Last week I took on the 12th overall pick and ended up with a team that was all about upside. If things broke in my favor, the team was going to be REAL good. If not... ehhhhhhh.

After being one of the top picks for two weeks in a row, I’m going with the 7th overall pick this week. Kinda right in the middle of the draft, with no benefit from the snake.

Here’s how the draft played out for me:

  • QB Jimmy Garoppolo SF (RD14)
  • RB Le’Veon Bell NYJ (RD4)
  • RB David Johnson HOU (RD5)
  • WR Davante Adams GB (RD1)
  • WR D.J. Moore CAR (RD3)
  • WR Diontae Johnson PIT (RD7)
  • TE Travis Kelce KC (RD2)
  • DST Buffalo Bills BUF (RD13)
  • K Robbie Gould SF (RD15)
  • BN David Montgomery CHI (RD6)
  • BN D’Andre Swift DET (RD8)
  • BN Matt Breida MIA (RD9)
  • BN Jalen Reagor PHI (RD10)
  • BN Sammy Watkins KC (RD11)
  • BN Brandon Aiyuk SF (RD12)

My first pick was a choice between Derrick Henry, Joe Mixon, and Davante Adams. I thought about Mixon long and hard but ultimately went with Adams because a) I think Adams will be the best receiver in fantasy this year and b) I decided then and there to see what waiting for running back could look like. So I took Kelce in the 2nd round, locking down the best tight end in fantasy and then took the uber high upside of D.J. Moore in the 3rd.

At running back, I’m actually pretty happy with Bell and Johnson as my two starting backs. There’s risk here but I think both guys are talented enough and will have a large enough workload to potentially be top 10 backs this year. Montgomery was a “let’s hope it all breaks his way” pick since if he actually is used properly this year, he could quickly outplay his ADP.

FantasyPros had the audacity to tell me I reached for Matt Breida in the 9th round to which I laugh. HA HA HA.

My final three wide receivers are guys who could be in for big roles in 2020 (or in the case of Sammy Watkins, is always in a big role someway somehow). Reagor might be the WR1 in Philly and Aiyuk could start the season as the 49ers top receiver if Deebo Samuel misses serious time.

What are your thoughts on the mock? Drop them in the comments. Like I said at the top, I’m going to be doing more of these, so vote in the poll which pick I should do next.
