Fantasy football drafts are all about maximizing value at each spot, whether that means reaching for your guy or picking that stud who looks to be falling for no obvious reason. In this new series, I’ve taken a look at groups of 3 players with similar current ADPs and have selected the one I’d be picking if it was me on the clock.
Which wide receiver would you take in the early fifth round: Michael Gallup (5.03), Robert Woods (5.04) or Odell Beckham Jr (5.05)?
I’m drafting: Odell Beckham Jr
This for me is one of the easiest ones to pick and I think closer to the season, we’ll see Beckham’s ADP rise rapidly to Round 2 as the hype grows about the Browns in 2020. Beckham played most of 2019 hurt but still managed his fifth 1000 yard season in six years in the league and he’s already boasting about being in the best shape of his life and I’m already sold that it will translate in year two in Cleveland and we’ll see a top-10 finish from OBJ.
Michael Gallup takes a knock from the group thanks to the Cowboys drafting CeeDee Lamb with the 17th pick this year. Though Gallup had a breakout 2019, finishing as the WR23 and seeing 113 targets and 66 receptions for 15.2 points per game, Lamb’s talent is likely to eat into those numbers in 2020. The overall Cowboys’ offense looks even more stacked than last year, but that benefits Dak Prescott with greater options more than any of the individual talent around him.
Robert Woods is the steadiest of the three, and has a pretty safe floor as the WR2 for the Rams, averaging 15.4 points per game over the past three seasons. He’s just never been much of a touchdown scorer, with just two scores last season and only 25 in his seven year career. The loss or Brandin Cooks opens up more potential targets, but the late season breakout of Tyler Higbee could eat into those. Woods is a solid WR2 option, but not in class of Beckham’s potential.
