I tweeted this question out to the Twittersphere via the Fake Teams twitter account just for fun. I always like seeing how people are leaning in terms of who they think could be in for huge fantasy seasons and if there are any sneaky names people are feeling. There were so many good responses I decided to write them up in a post because I think there’s a lot of discussion that can be had surrounding who we think will be the best at their respective position in 2020 fantasy football.
So without further ado, here are my tired and wired picks (because it’s always fun to include a couple of wild cards here and there) for who’ll finish numero uno at their position this year.
Quarterback
Tired Pick: Dak Prescott
If he’s not already, Dak should be getting serious consideration for ultimately finishing QB1 this year in fantasy. We’re well aware of the weapons that surround Dak—Amari Cooper, Ezekiel Elliott, Michael Gallup, and of course the new 88 CeeDee Lamb—and that squad is enough to thrust any quarterback into the top 5 discussion. Add to that that Dak has been a regular contributor on the ground and you have all the makings of a QB1 in 2020.
Wired Pick: Aaron Rodgers
Rodgers decides that Matt LaFleur’s attempts at making the Packers a run first offense are stupid and so goes rouge this season, throwing the ball everywhere and anywhere with reckless abandon. This might not be that wired given that Rodgers is currently going ahead of Prescott according to ADP (which shouldn’t happen, fix that America), but the thought of a gun slinging Aaron Rodgers this season isn’t necessarily on everyone’s mind. Also Baker Mayfield has entered the chat.
Running back
Tired Pick: Ezekiel Elliott
I’m likely getting too hyped about this Cowboys offense, but with so many passing options, defenses are not going to be able to stack the box to contain Zeke. That means Zeke is going to eat. Elliott is a lock for a top 5 fantasy back and I’m betting he takes home the RB1 title for the first time in his career.
Wired Pick: Miles Sanders
I think Joe Mixon has a shot at being a top 5 fantasy back this year, but let’s get wired wired here. As of now, the Eagles haven’t done their stupid idea of signing a power back to take 12-15 touches from Sanders so we’re still operating with an entirely Sanders run backfield. In the words of Captain Raymond Holt: Bingpot. Sanders flashed plenty last year as both a runner and a pass catcher. If he’s the sole running back in Philly through the entire season, I have a hard time not seeing him finishing in the top 5 and making a push for the top spot.
Wide receiver
Tired Pick: Michael Thomas
It’s hard to bet against a man who broke the NFL record in receptions last year and still is just reaching the prime of his career. While I highly doubt he records 149 catches again, he still will be in for a major workload as the Saints clear cut number one receiver. The addition of Emmanuel Sanders might even help Thomas’ efficiency in 2020 given that defenses won’t be able to focus solely on Thomas, though clearly that did nothing to slow him down last year. Yea, I think WR1 spot is all Thomas’ if he stays healthy.
Wired Pick: Allen Robinson
Shoutout to @a_a_ron_att who responded to my initial tweet with this pick. I’m joining the bandwagon! I’ve long been a Robinson fan and he is an extremely talented wide receiver who just so happens to have had terrible luck in the quarterback’s he’s had to play with. Like TERRIBLE luck. He’s played with Blane Gabbert, Blake Bortles, Mitchell Trubisky, Chase Daniels, and a bunch more no namers. He still has to play with Mitch but not for much longer as Nick Foles is almost certainly going to take over that job by Week 4. This a bold prediction, but I could talk myself into it. He was the WR8 in PPR last year...
Tight end
Tired Pick: Travis Kelce
I mean duh. With a weird offseason, players who already have a strong repertoire with their quarterback are going to get the advantage. 2020 Travis Kelce is the best tight end currently playing in the year 2020. (Now that Rob Gronkowski is back in the league, I can’t say Kelce’s the best in football right now.) He’s an easy pick.
Wired Pick: GRONK
NEVER COUNT OUT GRONK WHO SPENT ALL OFFSEASON WINNING WRESTLE MANIA AND CHUGGING BEER AND HAVING THE TIME OF HIS LIFE. AND NOW HE’S BACK WITH TOM BRADY HOW CAN YOU EVER QUESTION HIS ABILITIES!? I would also accept T.J. Hockenson here as your answer.
