Today I’m going to do something freeing. I’m going to simply give you our first pass at outfield rankings, fleas and all. No obsessively checking to see if there’s something too outlandish. No crazy last-minute tweaking. Just the organic, honest, top 75 outfielders for fantasy baseball in 2020. Feels good.
I always enjoy highlighting the ties, and we have a couple. Charlie Blackmon vs. Kris Bryant is fun, as I don’t see the difference in those two. You can argue Blackmon has a higher batting average floor, but Bryant is stealing more bases and everything else looks like a push (and I lean Bryant). And for clarity, I leaned Bryant before the leadoff news. But with the Cubbies already talking up Bryant’s baserunning skills, now I’m salivating. 10+ swipes could be in the works. I drafted Bryant at pick 69 in my most recent NFBC tilt. I’m loving it.
We also have a three-way tie with Oscar Mercado, Kyle Schwarber, and Franmil Reyes. While the Franimal (145.03) and Schwarber (145.28) are essentially tied per NFBC ADP, Mercado is being drafted much earlier around pick 115. As he should be, in my humble opinion. My counterparts will need to explain their hatred for Mercado this week...
Next up is Shin-Soo Choo vs. Bryan Reynolds. The old vs. the new! What a fun debate. However, per the NFBC Reynolds (187) is being drafted far more aggressively than Choo (249). Reynolds is the 50th man off the boards per NFBC, and our 50th here. Choo is the 65th man per NFBC, but our 49th. Hmmm. And I’m not arguing with it. In fact, here’s some Choo propaganda from the old timeline...
Random Statcast nugget of the afternoon: Shin-Soo Choo's 49.0% hard hit rate ranked inside the Top 5% of the MLB last year (he also posted a .371 OBP). Slated to bat leadoff most days for TEX and will rotate into DH spot frequently...some boring 20/10 veteran production. I'm in pic.twitter.com/qlv7N2HwWi

Next up, Joc Pederson vs. Mark Canha. This is another lopsided battle per NFBC, with Pederson (203) and Canha (255) being taken pretty far apart. Canha is the 68th outfielder off the NFBC boards, but we’ve got him pushed up to OF53. Me, I’m a little down on Joc and a little high on Canha...these two are pretty close for me.
Avisail Garcia (218 ADP) vs. Alex Verdugo (217 ADP) is really, really tight per NFBC. And we’ve got a tie between them here at Fake Teams. This one would be poll-worthy, but it’s a bummer than Verdugo has the STRESS FRACTURE IN HIS BACK right now. This, after a back injury cost him the end of the season last year? Currently, Mr. Verdugo is “unlikely” to be ready for Opening Day. Ya think?!? I’m surprised I only have these guys one pick apart in my rankings, as I much prefer Garcia in this pairing. I told you guys I wasn’t double-checking my work today.
Luis Arraez vs. Mitch Haniger is a battle of two guys I don’t really like. Arraez (239) and Haniger (349) are 100 picks apart per NFBC ADP. Maybe the other Fake Teamers aren’t too worried about Haniger’s health. Maybe I’m too worried about it. Anyway, time will tell. We have all week to dig in.
For now, what sticks out to you guys and gals the most? And what questions can we cover for you with regard to the outfield in 2020?
