2020 Fantasy Baseball Auction Values

Nearing the end of the 2019 campaign, even if I am winning my leagues, I always look forward to next season before the current season is over. I have put together auction values for standard 5x5 rotisserie assuming 12 teams and 28-player rosters. The unique thing about these values (or rankings) is that there are 336 players (12 teams x 28) and the total value adds up to exactly 12 teams x $260 budget.

You will notice my values are skewed toward top talent. It is personal preference. I use a “stud and dud” approach typically, or close to it. This is because the mid to bottom end of your draft is often replaced by waiver wire talent. This is an approach that can be taken advantage of more so in an auction than a snake draft. Generally, I like to get three top-25 players, skip on mid tier potential busts, and then load up on cheaper sleepers that are under $10. It worked very well for me this year as I targeted Acuña, Cole, and Soto to name a few while also targeting my favorite sleepers like Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, Ketel Marte, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Tyler Glasnow. Not all of these worked out in the long term. However, many names came off the waiver wire such as Yordan Alvarez, Aristides Aquino, Mike Soroka, and even Josh Bell in some cases.

My point is, that of the 336 players drafted, a good chunk of them will be thrown back to the waiver wire in favor of breakouts and eventually rookie call-ups. Some of them will just flat out bust - even those going for almost $20 - like Travis Shaw and Jesus Aguilar.

So my approach is go big on players I consider sure things and then go high upside in a rotisserie league. I don’t care to finish 5th or 6th like in a head-to-head league.
