History

Named by Oden Bowie, a Maryland Governor for the colt Preakness, who won the Dinner Party Stakes, this race will feature the Black-Eyed Susans, the Maryland State flower which boasts a vibrant yellow color in contrast to the red roses at Kentucky Derby. The record here is 1:53 set by Secretariat in 1973. This race has a wild history including some races where horses were handicapped with heavier weights on them, a 5 year old horse winning in 1890 and changing the distance of the race seven times! The race is capped at 14 horses who will sit and listen to “Maryland, My Maryland” sung by the audience prior to the start. The race was first televised by CBS in 1948.
