Fantasy football has always been a crapshoot, but the variance that has been hitting high and low this entire season has been exclusively frustrating. Take for instance Marvin Jones Jr. Going into Week 7, the Lions’ #2 receiver has caught just one touchdown and 20 total passes in five games. He was putting up borderline flex numbers. Then comes a matchup against a relatively top-tier defense in the Minnesota Vikings. Coming off of a 2-catch, 17-yard performance at Green Bay, most of everyone probably benched Jones in Week 7.
Jones proceeds to paste Xavier Rhodes and the Vikings for 10 catches, 93 yards and FOUR touchdowns. All of his owners lament benching him, even though the process was completely right. Following that explosion, owners were essentially forced to start him in Week 8, when he was taking on the hapless Giants secondary. In true fantasy football fashion, Jones lays an unusable 4/22/0 stat line as Kenny Golladay and Danny Amendola do all the damage.
There really isn’t a point to all of this other than to say that most of the time it’s not your fault when a player who was supposed to do nothing explodes on your bench, and when a player in a prime blowup spot lays an egg. That’s just the name of the game.
