NFL Power Rankings: How teams stand at the quarter mark

Where does your favorite NFL team rank after 4 games?

We love a good power rankings here at Fake Teams (who doesn’t) and now we’ve reached the end of (roughly) the first quarter of the season, I wanted to share my own version.

Not like the majority of opinion based power rankings out there, mine are a statistical version based on over 40 different metrics, weighted to give every team an efficiency rating out of 100% for their offense, defense and special teams and an overall rating based on the three phases combined.

Through four games its fair to say that two things are true. Firstly the numbers bear out what is obvious to everyone’s eyeballs that the Miami Dolphins are truly the worst team in football. I’ve been tracking these ratings since the 2007 season and between then and 2018, the worst team I’ve rated to date is the 2009 Lions, who finished with a season-long rating of -40.5%. In comparison, the 2019 Dolphins have a current rating of -72.9%, with both the worst offense (-7.8%) and defense (-74.7%) in the NFL and both also at historic low levels.

Secondly the Patriots defense is playing at a historically great level, with a current rating of +1.9%. When you consider the average defensive rating for the other 31 teams this season is -41.7% and the best defense I’ve ever recorded is the 2010 Steelers at -16.1%, you can see the different level the Patriots are currently playing at.

I will caveat the rankings to say that because of their Week 4 bye, the 49ers (currently ranked 2nd) and Jets (31st), are likely to be in false positions, that will start to even itself out when we revisit the rankings after Week 8.
