“It’s extremely rare that players of this caliber become available” Doug Wilson (San Jose Shark’s General Manger)
Trade Logistics
The Sharks just acquired Erik Karlsson from the Ottawa Senators for Chris Tierney, Dylan DeMelo, Josh Norris and Rudolfs Balcers as well as a conditional 2019 2nd round draft pick and conditional 2020 first round pick. If Erik resigns then Ottawa will receive a 2021 2nd round NHL draft pick.
A few things to keep in mind on this deal, the Sharks only have him for one years. He’s a free agent at the end of next year’s season and COULD sign with San Jose or COULD sign anywhere else.
Updated Roster
San Jose’s defense now looks like this:
- Brent Burns & Erik Karlsson (arguably two of the best offensive defense in the league)
- Marc-Edouard Vlasic & Joakim Ryan
- Brenden Dillon & Justin Braun
They have a top 3 defense guaranteed.
Fantasy Impact
If Erik Karlsson was putting up 60+ points on an offensively deficient Ottawa team, he’s putting up 80+ points on San Jose and (to me) is now a lock for the #1 defenseman to draft this year as well as a first round pick.
San Jose Offense Impact
They also now have Evander Kane who is on the top line with Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski. This team is insanely deep this year and should all benefit from Erik, especially the top Power Play unit: Kane, Thornton, Pavelski and Burns
