The Tour moves to Tennessee this week with the St. Jude Classic at at TPC Southwind. In this article, I’ll walk through how I made my favorite picks for this week’s tournament and put together a sample DraftKings lineup.
Previous Winners
Every winner since 2013 will be in the field this week and that includes the back-to-back defending champion, Daniel Berger. The table also gives the average number of strokes per round for each champion.
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/11479407/previouswinners.png)
Berger figures to be a chalky play this week, but I also really like Ben Crane this week. He’s coming off of six made cuts in a row and his last time out at the Fort Worth Invitational he finished 8th overall. My model also likes Crane this week enough to put him in a few lineups at only $7,400. Fabian Gomez and Harris English are afterthoughts for me this week despite their success at Southwind.
Model Results
A few notes about the projection results:
- Only players with enough qualified rounds will show up in the projections. In other words, if they are on PGA.com’s stats leaderboards then I will consider them for the projection. Brooks Koepka is a notable omission here.
- The stats to the right of the projection are the key stats used to build the projection.
- Results from every round at TPC Southwind since 2013 are fed into the model to build a projected round average for each player.

Course History
Here’s a look at how players have faired at this course in the past. I’ve also included their ranking in the projection model above in order to easily spot players with a strong course history and favorable projection this year.

Picks
$10k+
Brooks Koepka ($11,100)
A week before the US Open, I’m hesitant to invest heavily in any of the $10k+ players in this field. If I’m rolling the dice on one of them, it is Brooks Koepka who has not played as much golf as the others recently. I always fear for the late withdraw, or the withdraw after a first few poor holes in tournaments right before a major.
High-Tier
Adam Scott ($9,600)
A 10th place finish here last year, and coming in with great form - I’m plugging in Adam Scott and hoping the putter gets hot.
Tony Finau ($9,300)
We don’t have any course history here with Finau, but he grades out 7th overall in the model and plays up so well in DK scoring. I lean slightly with Finau over Byeong Hun An due to the difference in Strokes Gained: Approach and how much that stat has meant to past winners.
Mid-Tier
Luke List ($8,300)
Has made the cut both times he’s played here and grades out really well in our model. Another player where if the putter gets hot, it will carry him to a T5.
Kevin Chappell ($7,800)
His recent form is terrible, but the model still loves him and he has a great course history in Memphis. He’s finished 4th in 2017 and 22nd in 2015 at his only two appearances in this tournament. At this price, I’ll take a flier on Chappel and hope his recent play keeps others off of him.
Chez Reavie ($7,600)
Reavie is admittedly still a byproduct of his hot start to the 2018 season, as his 9th place in our model can be attributed to more to his February/March results. But Reavie has great success at this tournament with a 4th, 12th, and 22nd finish to his name.
Ben Crane ($7,400)
Former champion who is projected to finish well, Ben Crane is one of my favorite plays this week.
Cheap
Austin Cook ($7,200)
He hasn’t played this tournament in a few years, but Cook has a 13th and 22nd place finish in 2014 and 2015. He has missed his last two cuts at the Memorial and Forth Worth Invitationals, but I’m leaning on the course history with Cook.
Zac Blair ($6,700)
Has made the cut in each of this last three appearances in the St. Jude Classic and the model gives him a Top 20 finish this week. He’s only played once in the past two months in DraftKings tournaments, which was a 42nd finish at the AT&T Byron Nelson.
