Week 6 is in the books and the 2018 crop of quarterbacks continue to perform at a high level of efficiency. The Week 6 average rating was 53.3%, meaning season to date the average rating has risen to 52.9% against 49.1% at the same point last year.
The top passer of Week 6 came from the arm of Matt Ryan, who posted a +81.8% rating as the Falcons won a shootout against the Bucs at home. It was Ryan’s third rating of over 80% in four weeks and his season long rating of 68.4% is only slightly behind the pace of his 2016 MVP season (70.7% through six weeks), and he now sits third in the overall standings.
In terms of the overall standings, Drew Brees had a great bye week as his closest rivals performed at a lower level than they had season to date, leaving Brees where he finished last season, at the top of the standings. Brees returns from his bye week to face the Ravens this week, who are my top rated pass defense, allowing the lowest completion rate and yards per attempt, plus the highest adjusted sack rate thanks to the 11 sacks they had in their Week 6 win over the Titans.
Jared Goff drops out of the top spot and all the way down to 5th overall after he posted his lowest rating of the season, and the lowest rating from his time under Sean McVay with 31.8% against the Broncos.
Russell Wilson continued his upward trend and posted his best rating of the season for the second straight week. Wilson had a 77.3% rating as the Seahawks beat the Raiders in London and has moved up 10 spots in the last two weeks to sit 13th overall.
Number one overall pick Baker Mayfield posted the lowest rating of Week 6, with a 21.2% rating as the Browns were blown out at home by the Chargers. Mayfield completed just 47.8% of his passes and was sacked 5 times against the Chargers but has the chance to restore his confidence this week against the Bucs who I have rated as the worst pass defense in the NFL through 6 weeks.
The Buffalo quarterbacks remain at the bottom of the overall rankings, though this week saw Josh Allen pick up an elbow injury that is going to keep him sidelined this week. The Bills who had signed Derek Anderson to mentor Allen, are now going to be forced to start him against the Colts this week. Anderson last started a game back in Week 5 of the 2016 season for the Panthers, where he posted a 57.6% rating in a loss to the Buccaneers.
A special mentions for Marcus Mariota, as he became just the third player in the last 25 years to be sacked 11 times in a game as the Ravens defense went wild in shutting out the Titans in a 21-0 defeat.
