Aside from the last few lottery tickets in our minor league draft, we have recently completed both the major league and minor league portions of an 18-team salary cap league on FanTrax. That means over 700 picks have been made in a slow-draft format, and below are the results for your viewing pleasure. The format is relatively standard, nothing that would drastically alter the draft strategy, but with contracts and the ability to re-sign players, the approach is closer to a dynasty format than a re-draft. Be sure to scroll all the way to the end where 7 of our managers gave some insight into how the draft went and offered some good tidbits if you’re about to enter a draft yourself. Each manager answered the following four questions:
1. Who do you feel was your best value pick in the MLB draft (please include round number in the response)?
2. Which pick would you like to have back and why (could be for both MLB or MiLB)?
3. General thoughts or trends that match or differed from expectations:
4. If you traded picks, did it accomplish the goal you were aiming for? Would you make the trade again?
Now on to the results....

Post-Draft Thoughts and Feedback From Managers
Team Name: Las Vegas 51s Twitter - @Tonybps1 Website - www.prospects1500.com
1. Who do you feel was your best value pick in the MLB draft?
Round 8, Pick 9 - Miguel Cabrera. Yes, he’s old and coming off a down year but I was willing to gamble at that point that he will bounce back at the 153rd pick.
2. Which pick would you like to have back and why (could be for both MLB or MiLB)?
A.J. Minter - MiLB - Round 5, Pick 6. Yes, I’m playing to win now and could use his Holds (possible saves if he supplants Arodys Vizcaino and strikeouts) but he would have been available later.
3. General thoughts or trends that match or differed from expectations:
I didn’t think pitching would go that early in the MLB draft. 17 pitchers went in the first 3 rounds (54 picks). The pitching run made me take Robbie Ray in Round 3, Pick 10 over Rafael Devers (who went right after Ray and I really wanted).
4. If you traded picks, did it accomplish the goal you were aiming for? Would you make the trade again?
Yep - traded MiLB picks in rounds 3,4,5,6,7 to get MLB picks in rounds 6,7. Still okay doing the trade but I was more reactive because I saw pitching going and wanted to trade up in MLB to get closers before they went. With the amount of good MiLB players still available, I should have traded more MiLB picks to move up more in the MLB draft.

1. Who do you feel was your best value pick in the MLB draft?
Pick 271 (Rd 16 Pick 1) Todd Frazier. Granted the BA leaves something to be desired however to get a potential 30 HR 90 RBI bat about 100 picks after where he should have been taken I feel was great value at that point in the draft.
2. Which pick would you like to have back and why (could be for both MLB or MiLB)?
Going into the draft it was Cody Bellinger. It was all about Cody Bellinger. So as I go to make my first round selection Cody Bellinger is sitting there wrapped in a bow. My selection: Chris Sale.
3. General thoughts or trends that match or differed from expectations:
Drafting Chris Sale first was an immediate shift in strategy. It was going to be all about pitching. However what I didn’t foresee was 14 pitchers being taken in the first 3 rounds and by the end my rotation consisted of Sale, Greinke, Lynn, Tanaka and lottery tickets Stephenson, Heaney, and Wheeler. So not really the outcome I imagined.
4. If you traded picks, did it accomplish the goal you were aiming for? Would you make the trade again?
While securing the 1st pick in the MiLB draft I then traded for the 18th pick - in each of the first 10 rounds. So I had double picks to start and end each round through round 10. While I did have to give up my 2nd 4th and 6th round MLB picks it allowed me to draft a pretty formidable farm system.

1. Who do you feel was your best value pick in the MLB draft?
MLB Round 6.7, best value pick Whit Merrifield. He is an upcoming second baseman with KC Royals. He might be an unsung hero like Frank White was in the ‘70 & ‘80. MiLB Round 8.12, best value pick Sam Carlson, Pitcher Seattle. From what I read his fastball reaches 93-97 and it sinks, runs and has command. Plus he has solid secondary pitches with the change up and slider.
2. Which pick would you like to have back and why (could be for both MLB or MiLB)?
Which pick would I like to have back, MiLB Round 5.7 Jhailyn Ortiz. Nothing against that guy, I just forgot Harrison Bader was still available.
4. If you traded picks, did it accomplish the goal you were aiming for? Would you make the trade again?
I traded switched/traded picks 4.12 & 15.7 for picks 13.16 & 15.16. Round & pick 13.16 I chose Brian Mundell 1B Colorado. This filled the 1B spot in my MiLB draft. Research says Brian is flying under the radar & could see action in 2018.

1. Who do you feel was your best value pick in the MLB draft?
For me, Addison Russell in the 14th round, 194 overall is a steal. He’s 23 and young players were flying off the board several rounds higher than anticipated because this was a dynasty league. At that price I can retain him his entire career if things go well.
2. Which pick would you like to have back and why (could be for both MLB or MiLB)?
The run on starting pitchers in a dynasty startup league caught me off guard. I really anticipated the top 4 rounds being dominated by hitters. This run forced me to “gamble” on a young Justin Verlander, in a Dynasty league, 86 overall. I think the value is okay, but I was planning to get a young pitcher (Nola, or Berrios), but they both went earlier in the round along with my two back up picks Darvish and Happ. I’ve never owned Verlander in any league and decided here was the time to change that.
3. General thoughts or trends that match or differed from expectations:
Speed and Starting pitching dominated the early parts of the major league draft. Almost the exact opposite can be said for the minor league draft. Many owners seemed to shy away from high end pitchers in the early and mid rounds, opting for “safer” hitters.
4. If you traded picks, did it accomplish the goal you were aiming for? Would you make the trade again?
I’m thrilled with trading back 11 spots in the first round (Khris Davis was picked). I still got the guy I wanted in Matt Olson and I added a first round draft pick. I moved back a few slots in the minor league draft and snagged will likely be my future Ace, Brent Honeywell. Dropping back those few slots allowed me to get Franklin Barreto to start the third round (37 overall) and Riley Pint (127 overall).

1. Who do you feel was your best value pick in the MLB draft (please include round number in the response)?
I feel best about selecting Vlad Jr at 3 overall in the prospect draft. Have no fear, Vlad Jr will soon be here.
2. Which pick would you like to have back and why (could be for both MLB or MiLB)?
Round Three I selected Christian Yelich. All this Miami foresail happened and I want no part of this player unless he gets traded. Same for Realmuto in Round Eight.
3. General thoughts or trends that match or differed from expectations:
I have no elite base stealers and I hoped to get one. Didn’t sack up early and missed out.
4. If you traded picks, did it accomplish the goal you were aiming for? Would you make the trade again?
I only made one trade and it was minimal. I didn’t really even have a big reason to do the trade, I was just bored. Moved up a few spots in Round four of the prospect draft and selected Jake Bauers.

1. Who do you feel was your best value pick in the MLB draft (please include round number in the response)?
Yoan Moncada at 3.1. If he turns out to be the player I (and many others) think he’ll be, he should have went in Round 1. Then again, its your classic risk/reward profile.
2. Which pick would you like to have back and why (could be for both MLB or MiLB)?
Ahhh, Aaron Nola at 5.1. I love the kid...especially being a Phillies fan. But I think I may have panicked in seeing other SPs fly off the boards. I’ve always been a “bat over arm” owner so I suppose I wish I would have grabbed another bat there.
3. General thoughts or trends that match or differed from expectations:
Pitchers went waaaaaay earlier than I expected. Uncomfortably so...if I’m honest...lol. I almost felt bad taking so many bats while others loaded up on overrated SPs that only help ya 1 outta every 5 days. See previoud. But that’s always been my philosophy so I’m not changing now. Oh and closers....my God!
4. If you traded picks, did it accomplish the goal you were aiming for? Would you make the trade again?
So I essentially went all-in by trading my 1st 10 Minors picks and getting another 1st rd pick to pair with Mr Trout. Little did I know that I’d be able to make another deal & turn that pick into Jose Altuve at 1.4! Imho, I got the 2 top players in this roto format. So I’m quite pleased indeed. If I don’t compete right outta the gate, its nobody’s fault but my own.
