PGA Championship
Quail Hollo Club
August 10th - 13th
The format:
Three Premium Priced picks ($8,000+)
Two Mid-tier Priced picks ($6,000- $8,000)
Three Bargain Basement picks ($6,000-)
Pricey Picks ($8,000+)
Jon Rahm ($9,200)
Hideki Matsuyama ($8,800)
Rory McIlroy ($10,300)
Jon is coming back to form after back to back missed cuts at the Memorial and US Open. He finished 44th at the Open Championship and 28th last week at the World Golf Championships - Bridgestone Invitational. Abroad he won the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open and finished 10th at the Open de France. He has a monster drive as he is 1st in strokes gained off the tee and 4th in strokes gained tee to green. Hideki I discussed in my previous article is off three consecutive top 15 finishes, he's finished in the top 15 in each major this year and he was 11th at Quail Hollow last year during the Wells Fargo Championship. Rory has a monster drive and is off back to back top 5 finishes at the Open Championship and World Golf Championship. He finished 7th at the Masters earlier this year and missed the cut at the US Open. Rory finished 4th at the Wells Fargo Championship last year.
Mid-Tier Pick ($6,000-$8,000):
Matt Kuchar ($7,900)
Xander Schauffele ($6,200)
Matt has finished in the top 20 in 6 of his last 7 tournaments. His results at majors this year: 2nd, 16th and 4th. He's 64th in strokes gained off the tee and 34th in strokes gained tee to green. Xander is 31st on the tour in strokes gained off the tee with a strong putting game too (23rd in strokes gained putting) Over his last 6 tournaments he has finished in the top 35 in each tournament. His majors this year have been 5th place and 20th place, I will continue to be bullish on Xander until he misses a cut (much like Jon Rahm earlier this year).
Bargain Picks ($6,000-):
Hudson Swafford ($4,800)
Bryson DeChambeau ($5,000)
James Hahn ($5,500)
Bryson's last 6 tournaments: 26th, 17th, 14th, 1st, missed cut and 60th. Since the streak where he missed 8 straight cuts, he's turned his game around. He should succeed here because of his driving capability where he is 24th on the tour in strokes gained off the tee. Hudson is 29th on the tour in strokes gained off the tee and is coming off a 10th place finish at the World Golf Championship - Bridgestone Invitational. James Hahn is 63rd in strokes gained off the tee, he's finished 10th, 74th, 20th, 46th and 6th in his last 6 tournaments. He won the Wells Fargo Championship last year.
Average Stats (I can't go based on scores, each tournament is different contingent on how many birdies occur so I will go on finishing position which is mostly close to how well they did.)
Pricey Picks: 45th (31st percentile)
Mid-Tier Picks: 48th (34th percentile)
Bargain Picks: 62nd (44th percentile)
