Justin Upton has been traded to the Los Angeles Angels (full details here). The deal was complete just moments before the Thursday waiver deadline. This is most likely the last big trade the baseball world will see in 2017 season. Remember, players acquired after the August 31 deadline are not eligible to play in the postseason.
Upton is hitting .279 with a .904 OPS. He has 28 HR and 94 RBI as well as 10 SB. Those numbers have him as the #9 OF in roto leagues this year. His value remains mostly the same but he will have a better lineup around him. The Angels solidified their outfield with this move by pairing Upton with Kole Calhoun and Mike Trout. Upton is a top 15 OF and top 40 overall player for me following this deal.
The Angels also sent Cameron Maybin to the Astros for cash considerations. Details here. Maybin is hitting .235 with just 1 HR but does offer speed with 29 SB in 93 games this season. He recently returned from injury and has 4 SB in 18 games. This trade could help Maybin if he receives enough playing time. The Astros lineup is one of the best in baseball but that also means there are more players Maybin needs to out perform to earn at bats. Maybin remains just inside my top 250 for roto leagues with the hope he’ll provide runs and steals.
