Dell Technologies Championship
TPC Boston
September 1st – 4th
The format:
Three Premium Priced picks ($8,000+)
Two Mid-tier Priced picks ($6,000- $8,000)
Three Bargain Basement picks ($6,000-)
Pricey Picks ($8,000+):
Hideki Matsuyama ($9,200)
Justin Thomas ($9,300)
Rory McIlroy ($9,500)
Hideki missed one cut, it’s not happening again in back to back tournaments. He’s 8th on the tour in eagles, 3rd in birdies, 10th in total strokes gained. I think Hideki is a top 5 lock. Justin followed up his PGA Championship with a 6th place finish at the Northern Trust, I’m banking on one more top 10 finish before possible regression. Prior to his 34th place finish at the Northern Trust (very respectable) he was 22nd, 5th, 4th, 17th, Missed Cut, 35th, 7th, 30th, 4th and 7th. That is 5 top ten finishes and 7 top 25 finishes. Add to that he’s 34th on the tour in eagles and 28th in birdies
Mid-Tier Pick ($6,000-$8,000):
Kevin Chappell ($6,700)
Charley Hoffman ($7,000)
Kevin’s last 4 tournament finishes: 8th, 13th, 33rd and 6th. He is 15th on the tour in Eagle Average (and I could see him getting 1-2 this weekend). 21st in strokes gained tee to green he is going to either get points through 1-2 eagles or through a top 20 finish on Monday. Charley now has 4 top 20 finishes in his last 5 tournaments, how is he still so cheap?!? 23rd in eagles, 12th in birdie average, 1st in total birdies and 3rd in total eagles with a strong likelihood of a top 20 finish!
Bargain Picks ($6,000-):
Chad Campbell ($5,500)
Bud Cauley ($5,600)
Jamie Lovemark ($5,700)
Chad is 22nd in stokes gained approaching the green and 13th in greens in regulation which is something he should do easily here. If he can putt with any success he will be in the top 20 1-2 days (likely Friday and Sunday where he averages 12th and 9th in scoring). Bud has been bouncing back strong after missed cuts this year (12th, 35th, 9th, MC and 3rd over his last 5). He’s 31st on the tour in stokes gained tee to green and 11th in approaching the green. He might sneak into the top 20 on Satuday or Sunday but usually falters a bit on the last day. Jamie had made the cut in 9 consecutive tournaments prior to missing the cut at the Northern Trust, during that 9 tournament stint he had 5 top 25 finishes, I’ll take the gamble for $5,700.
Average Stats
(I can't go based on scores, each tournament is different contingent on how many birdies occur so I will go on finishing position which is mostly close to how well they did.)
Pricey Picks: 45th (31st percentile)
Mid-Tier Picks: 46th (32nd percentile)
Bargain Picks: 57th (40th percentile)
