Swarming MLB: AI Picks for August 25th

UNU, MLB

Hall of Fame manager Tony LaRussa had a favorite saying for reporters: “In baseball, you’re never as good as you look when you’re winning all the time, and never as bad as you look when you’re losing.” What he was referring to is that baseball – with its millions of variables within a single game – can be incredibly unpredictable in short sample sizes. During a winning streak, you wonder if you’ll ever lose. In a losing streak, it’s hard to imagine getting out of the spiral.

The UNU Baseball Swarm knows all about this phenomenon. The swarm followed a terrific June and July with a fairly non-descript August, where for the first two weeks they posted a .500 winning percentage. We figured that it was about time for a rocket ride of success, and that’s what has happened lately. The swarm followed up a 12-3 Friday night last week with a 12-4 Tuesday this week. The only thing tempering our enthusiasm about Tuesday’s result was having two of our four high confidence games go down in flames. These things happen when Doug Fister turns into 1967 Bob Gibson for a night.

Might be tempting for the swarm to just go ahead and pick the Dodgers every night for our pick of the night. It’s not a bad play, given the Dodgers and their .800 winning clip over the past month or so. Tonight though, the swarm noticed Zack Greinke on the mound for the Diamondbacks at home against the struggling Giants and jumped all over that game.
