Fanduel Picks: The Northern Trust

Russell Henley and Charles Howell III can give you a strong points push out of the gates for bargain pricing.

Michael Madrid-USA TODAY Sports

The Northern Trust
Glen Oak Club
August 24th -€” 27th

The format:
Three Premium Priced picks ($8,000+)
Three Mid-tier Priced picks ($6,000- $8,000)
Two Bargain Basement picks ($6,000-)

Pricey Picks ($8,000+)

Jordan Spieth ($9,900)
Rickie Fowler ($9,400)
Daniel Berger ($8,100)
Rickie has the lowest scoring average among all the golfers, 33rd in driving distance but ultimately I'm banking on him bringing top 25 points 1-2 days here. Daniel Berger is 19th in scoring average, he is 63rd in driving distance and 8th in birdie average. A  27th place finish at Masters (supposedly Glen Oaks Club is created as a mimic off Augusta). Jordan is too tantalizing to pass up here.

Mid-Tier Pick ($6,000-$8,000):
Kevin Chappell ($6,200)
Charley Hoffman ($7,000)
Phil Mickelson ($7,200)
Kevin is 24th in driving distance, 23rd in strokes gained tee to green. He finished 7th at the Masters, has three consecutive top 15 finishes and he's 14th on the tour in eagles. Charley finished 22nd at the Masters, he's off 2 top 3 finishes in his last 3 tournaments, 49ther in driving distance, 13th in strokes gained off the tee. To be honest, Charley could finish with a sneaky top 5 placing at a tournament that features all of the marquee names. Phil is a stretch for this reason. He's 75th in driving distance and has missed the cut in 2 of his last 3 tournaments (both were majors). The counter argument is that he finished 22nd at the Masters,  he's 7th in strokes gained approaching the green (21st in total strokes gained) and he has excelled at par 5's this season. For $7,200 he is a risk worth taking given his propensity of surprising people when they count him out.

Bargain Picks ($6,000-):
Russell Henley ($5,900)
Charles Howell III ($5,800)
Russell is 22nd in scoring average, 49th in driving distance, he finished 11th at the Masters and 29th in strokes gained off the tee. If he can get a quick jump in Thursday and Friday, enjoy it, he will falter on Saturday and Sunday but for sub $6,000, he will get you a strong start. Charles is 20th in scoring average, 54th in driving distance, 44th in strokes gained tee to green, 34th in strokes gained total, he's struggled over the last 2 tournaments which is why his scoring is low but he will give you a strong Thursday and Friday much like Russell. Howell is 5th and 4th in round 1 and 2 scoring average.

Average Stats
(I can't go based on scores, each tournament is different contingent on how many birdies occur so I will go on finishing position which is mostly close to how well they did.)
Pricey Picks: 45th (31st percentile)
Mid-Tier Picks: 46th (32nd percentile)
Bargain Picks: 57th (40th percentile)
