Fantasy Baseball 2017: Rest of Season Rankings

What’s wrong with Jake Arrieta? How good is Jordan Montgomery? Will Fernando Rodney ever give up a run?

Much like the Yankees, Jordan Montgomery has exceeded expectations. Where does he end up in this top 250 update?

Welcome back! Another week, another Top 250 update. Let’s jump right into it.

Quick reminder, these rankings are for standard 5x5 rotisserie. I’ll do my best to explain any large rankings changes and feel free to ask player specific questions in the comments. This is your weekly forum to sound off with any fantasy questions you have. I’m here to help you!

Quick Hits

  • Trea Turner moves into the top 10 in this week’s update. Some might be underwhelmed with Turner’s performance up to this point. Despite this, he is the #6 overall player in roto leagues this season. This includes his .277 average and his time missed from injury. The Nationals shortstop is the #1 player in fantasy over the past 30 days. His stats in that time frame: .311 average with 24 runs scored and 23 SB. This included just 2 HR and 9 RBI but I call this a good thing for Turner. If he can be the #1 overall player in fantasy with such little power, imagine the impact he will have once he starts hitting like he did late last season. Well, injuries suck! Just as I was getting ready to make Turner a mainstay in the top 10 he is hit by a pitch and has suffered a broken wrist! We do not have a timetable for his return. The most obvious comparison we have would be Freddie Freeman. Freeman suffered a similar injury, also while on his way to becoming a top 10 player. Fantasy Gods! Freeman landed on the DL back on May 18. He could return next Friday, and after the All-Star break at the latest. This puts his return at around 7-8 weeks. If we assume the same for Turner, he will be back around mid August. Freeman dropped around 50 spots when his injury happened. The problem is that Freeman can still after top 30 value for 3 months. Turner may be able to offer top 10 value, but it looks like it will only be a month and a half at most. For now Turner falls around 50 spots. I’ll update more if more news of a timetable becomes available.
  • Jake Arrieta falls 34 spots for me and is now my #17 SP. I’m officially concerned. Over his past 30 days, which is 6 starts, he has a 4.22 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. His most recent outing against the Nationals worries me the most. 6 BB in that one, not to mention he allowed Washington to run wild on him. The strikeout rate is still good which shows room for improvement. Arrieta is still a top 20 SP based on what he is capable of but the walks are starting to make him look mortal.
  • Corey Knebel has joined the elite at RP. Since earning his 1st save of the year back in May, Knebel has allowed just 3 runs over 20.2 innings of work. He has also struck out 37 in that time frame. That’s good for a 16.11 K/9. Seems pretty elite to me. The Brewers are also winning their division now (believe it or not) so close opportunities should remain for Knebel all year.
  • Jordan Montgomery is the highest ranked of the 5 new players to the top 250 this week. He has been pretty great all year, definitely exceeding expectations, much like his Yankees he pitches for. Over the past 30 days, Montgomery has a 2.59 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. In addition to this, he has won 4 of his past 5 starts and has allowed 2 or fewer runs in 5 of his past 6 outings. Look for Montgomery to continue to climb in the top 250 if this keeps up.
  • Rich Hill and Alex Cobb both responded to almost dropping out of the top 250 by putting up great starts. This buys them time... for now!

Losing Faith

Here are a few players who dropped in my rankings and, if their poor performances continue, could soon be outside my top 250:

  • Tanner Roark (12.51 ERA over past 3 starts)
  • Aaron Sanchez (When will he start again???)
  • Cole Hamels (K rate HAS to get better)

Hello, Goodbye

The following players are new additions to the top 250:

  • Jordan Montgomery (see above)
  • Fernando Rodney (18.2 straight scoreless innings)
  • Zack Godley
  • Dan Straily
  • Trey Mancini (Top 50 over past 30 days and Top 40 over past 15 days)

The following players are no longer in my top 250:

  • Hunter Renfroe
  • Matt Holliday
  • Aledmys Diaz
  • Cesar Hernandez
  • Koda Glover

See you next week!
