Here I was just about to say that the NFL trade deadline has come and passed with no more excitement and then BOOM! Schefter drops THIS bomb on us:
Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin traded to Buffalo, source tells ESPN.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 31, 2017
Holy moly Batman!
The Bills clearly needed to bolster their receiving core and they did just that going out and getting Benjamin who gives them a big body receiver who can make plays down the field. I’m not entirely sure how much this moves the needle for Benjamin in terms of fantasy value. It does help, don’t get me wrong. He’s now in an offense where he’s going to be the guy, it’s whether or not he can perform at that level week in and week out.
It does help Tyrod Taylor a lot as he now has someone to pass the football too. Jordan Matthews can’t seem to stay healthy and Zay Jones has been wildly disappointing. Hopefully Benjamin will come in and quickly build a rapport with Taylor and give him a legit receiving option.
Meanwhile in Carolina, start buying Devin Funchess stock if there’s any left. He has been putting together a decent season but now is going to be the number one guy in Carolina. Also, I hope you haven’t sold Christian McCaffrey. You think he’s gotten a lot of targets in the passing game up to now, just you wait for the second half of the season. This move might also hint at a Greg Olsen return this season. Olsen has been out for much of the season with a foot injury but has been cleared to practice this week. His return might be coming sooner than expected.
On a side note: while I was writing my piece earlier this week about McCaffrey, I saw a lot of quotes from coaching staff saying that we hadn’t seen the best McCaff yet and that there were big plays to come. You think they all knew about this and were hinting that a big change to the offense was coming? Who knows!
Things are certainly going to be fun to watch in Buffalo. We just witnessed the first great game from LeSean McCoy and if the Bills’ rushing attack is returning to anywhere near the threat it once was, adding a receiver like Benjamin makes their offense very exciting.
Whose fantasy value is helped most by this trade?
