As a rookie Montgomery was a big contributor to Yankees’ success last season. I usually try to stay away from players who are known to give up a good amount of fly balls. and Montgomery is one of these players. He had a fly ball rate of 41.6% last season playing for the Yankees, but his 26.5% hard contact rate was the sixth best in the majors among pitchers with at least 100 innings pitched. If he is able to contain the hard contact batters hit against him, then his fly ball rate may not turn out to be too worrisome.
The driving factor for fantasy owners being so excited about Montgomery is his strikeout potential. He had a respectable 8.34 K/9 last season, but we could see that strikeout rate rise in 2018. He owned a very impressive swinging strike rate of 12.2% last season, and could easily post a K/9 over 9. Keep an eye on Montgomery, and if he starts the season off strong don’t be afraid to pick up the 25 year old off waivers.
