It’s starting to look like paying 2 first round draft picks for Deshaun Watson was the best bargain of the 2017 draft. Texans won the AFC South for the past 2 seasons thanks to a stout defense and weak division foes. But now, with JJ Watt and Whitney Mercilus out for the rest of the season, the Texans are going to have to lean on their rookie QB.
Fortunately for Texans fans, they finally get to see what a competent quarterback and a bevy of weapons on offense can do under Bill O’Brien’s direction. Through 5 games (4.5 games if you want to get technical about it), Deshaun Watson trails only Alex Smith in fantasy points for QBs.
Let that sink in. Alex Smith-Deshaun Watson, 1-2 in scoring for QBs so far this year (thanks to @Jbarn54 for that stat on the @RB1Podcast).
What separates Deshaun Watson past Texans quarterbacks is his willingness to throw to a receiver with a corner-back in the area. The Texans 2 first-round receivers are making that pay off by going up to get those contested passes.
Even with second-year-first-round-pick Will Fuller sidelined, the Texans’ offense was getting hot as Watson made his quick adjustment to the NFL.
Now with Will Fuller back in action, the Texans offense has been fantasy gold. Fuller himself has become a top acquisition target in fantasyland, posting 4 TDs and 92 receiving yards in 2 games. The aggressive passing game is ushering in a new era for the Texans at just the right time with J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus out for the rest of the year.
And so now the rookie QB will have to put this team on his back. Will he have enough to get the Texans their 3rd consecutive AFC South crown?
