Vargas was a pretty under the radar prospect, but when he finally got the chance to show his skills at the major league level he did not disappoint. In 2014 he had a .274 average while also putting 9 long balls over the fence in just 234 plate appearances. In 2015 however things did not go as well as they had the year prior. He struggled mightily and spent most of the season in the minor leagues. Vargas has never been known to hit for a lot power, but we have seen glimpses of some serious power potential like when he hit a 483 foot home run off Derek Holland this past season. Ever since getting called up, we have yet to see Vargas get over 300 plate appearances at the major league level. With Joe Mauer’s strong 2017 there is a good chance that Vargas’ playing time is at a minimum, but if Vargas can impress out of the gate then he could be the team’s full time designated. If so we could see Vargas put up 25-30 home runs in 2018.
