Tour Championship
When: September 22nd - 25th
Where: East Lake Golf Club
2015 Winner: Jordan Spieth (-9)
This is the Championship event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs
The format of this will go: I will select golfers based on the Yahoo format. I will select one A golfer, 2 B golfers, 1 C golfer and one dark horse pick, this should space out the selections and provide a vast field to select from for anyone who is in a format where you are limited to 10 starts per year.
East Lake Golf Club - The initial 7 holes were built in 1906 later expanded to 18 holes in 1907. In 1913 Donald Ross redesigned the course. Driving is acumen is important here as a variety of straight vs. long vs. doglegs occur, some with trees intentionally blocking easy passes. This course favors the stronger hitters as most tend to this late in the season. Add in some elevation changes and players will have to put some mustard on the ball to succeed.
A:
Adam Scott - Guess whose number one in Tee to Green shots gained? Guess who has 3 consecutive 4th place finishes? Guess who I think is going to win the FedEx Cup this year?
B:
Patrick Reed - 26th on strokes gained tee to green he will fight for that win all the way down to the end. 8 top 15 finishes in the last 9 tournaments it will be a lot of fun to watch his play at East Lake through the weekend.
Rory McIlroy -I know this is cherry picking but this is the Championship and he has a great track record here. He finished 16th here last year, 2nd in 2014, did not play in 2013, and 10th in 2012.
C:
Matt Kuchar - Long powerful drives are needed and Kuchar is among the best on the tour for that. Coming off back to back poor finishes, he posted a 4th place finish at the BMW Championship. I don't think he'll win but I think he has a good shot at a top ten finish.
Sleeper Pick:
Gary Woodland - He's 20th in the FedEx points but has a great percentage of making up shots Tee to Green. He has three consecutive top 25 finishes among some tough competition, he's 9th in driving distance and 10 of his last 12 rounds have been under par. I think he can finish in the top 10 at Eastlake.
Last tournament results - BMW Championship (69 total) - Scott, McIlroy, Matsuyama, Grillo, Swafford
A: 4th place
B: 24th place; 42nd place
C: 32nd place
Dark Horse: 56th place
YTD Avg: (Average field of 132 people)
A: 34th place
B: 34th place
C: 49th place
Dark Horse: 49th place
Fun factoid about this tournament: The director of the athletic club that once was East Lake was John Heisman.
