For those of you who play in mono or "only" leagues, I will published my NL-only first base rankings yesterday and today I am posting my AL-only first base rankings.
First base is a position where you want to make sure you draft a solid power hitter, one capable of hitting 25-35 home runs and driving in near 100 runs, while hitting for a good average. Last season, 20 hitters hit 30 or more home runs, nine of which were first baseman, with seven of them hailing from an American League club. In addition, 16 first baseman hit 20 or more home runs in 2015, seven of which played in the American League.
The American League first base landscape includes a top first baseman who hit just 18 home runs last season, and has seen his power decline in two successive seasons. But, it includes two first baseman who hit 40+ home runs last year as well, Chris Davis and Albert Pujols. Davis should be able to duplicate the feat again in 2016, but Pujols may have trouble breaking 30.
The addition of designated hitters David Ortiz, Prince Fielder and Kendrys Morales definitely makes the first base position appear deeper, but if you remove them, the position thins out after the top 5-6 legitimate first baseman. That said, the addition of Twins 1B/DH Byung-ho Park certainly adds some intrigue to the position. I think he could put up decent power numbers even in Target Field this season. All said, there were seven AL first baseman, and DH's, who hit 30 or more home runs last season, so if you need power, look no further.
Those of you who play in OBP leagues have plenty to choose from, as twelve AL first baseman, including the DH's. reached base at a .350 clip or better in 2015.
