Top 20 AL-Only Shortstop Rankings for 2016

Ray ranks his top 20 shortstop for AL-only leagues and there is plenty of power at the position in 2016.

Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

For those of you who play in mono or "only" leagues, I will be published my NL-only shortstop rankings yesterday and my AL-only shortstop rankings today.

The American League has four of the top five fantasy shortstops in Manny Machado, Carlos Correa, Troy Tulowitzki and Xander Bogaerts, and even after those four, there are a few other shortstops that will help you across the five fantasy categories as well.

I admit, we are cheating with ranking Machado at shortstop in our consensus rankings, but he did meet the Yahoo five game minimum in 2015. I prefer the 20 game position eligibility minimum, but many of your, or most of you, do play in Yahoo leagues. That said, there is no question in my mind that he is the top choice at shortstop where he is eligible in 2016, coming off his breakout 35 home run, 20 stolen base campaign last season.

Closely behind him is Astros shortstop Carlos Correa who could move into the top spot in 2017, as he could easily duplicate Machado's 35 home run, 20 stolen base season in 2016. He has the power and speed to join the 20-20 club assuming he can stay healthy.

One guy who is undervalued in drafts this season is Athletics shortstop Marcus Semien, who is coming off a 15 home run, 11 stolen base season, and I think he could exceed the power production in 2016. Granted, he is not a very good fielding shortstop, but the bat has promise, even in o.Com stadium.

There are several power-hitting choices at shortstop in the AL, and after Machado and Correa, you have the former top fantasy shortstop in Troy Tulowitzki, who has moved from Coors Field to the Rogers Centre, and is looking to ":bounce back" after a but of a disappointing 2015 season for him. After Tulo, you have Semien and Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts who is on the cusp of a double digit home run season, and hits in a very good lineup.

There is plenty of speed among the shortstop position in the AL, as no fewer than 12 stole ten or more bases in 2015, but three of the top five have moved over to the NL this season, Alexei Ramirez, Erick Aybar and Jose Reyes, so there is a potential for fewer shortstops offering owners double digit steals this season.
