CBSSports.com AL-Only Analysts League: Auction Draft analysis

Auction drafts are complicated. AL-only leagues are complicated. Industry leagues, where the owners all do this all the time, are complicated. An AL-only auction made up of fantasy industry professionals? Good lord, man.

Wednesday was the draft for the CBSSports.com Analysts-Only league on the AL side. Remember those complications from a paragraph ago? Well, this year I came in with a new strategy that was basically "let the draft come to me." Don't overplan, overstrategize. Get in there and see what happens.

(This new laissez-faire strategy has nothing to do with the fact that I worked 30 hours the two days before the draft, and I'm editing a novel, and I'm planning a wedding. Oh no. No sir.)

The end result of the draft, for me, was that I veered from my traditional auction strategy of stars and scrubs. Normally, in an auction, I'll load up on big names, run out of money before just about everyone, and find a host of $1 near the end of the draft. Wednesday, though, I only spent more than $25 on one player (woooooo, Mookie Betts), and had 12 different players between $10 and $25.

By contrast, in last year's league, I took four guys at 25-plus, and only four at $10-25. So it's a variant on my normal strategy. It meant my biggest name is Betts, but it also meant I got Yan Gomes, Byung-Ho Park, Rougned Odor, Mike Moustakas, Starlin Castro, Chris Dickerson, Kole Calhoun, Danny Salazar, Ken Giles, Marcus Stroman, Yu Darvish and Shawn Tolleson.

It's a change. The problem with this strategy is I only have one guy I'm positive on, in Betts. If I'm wrong on two or three of the mid-priced guys, things fall apart in a hurry. On the flip side, I don't need any one or two players to absolutely dominate. It's a mixed bag.
