For those of you who play in mono or "only" leagues, I published my NL-only second base rankings yesterday and today we discuss my AL-only second base rankings.
The second base position in the American League is particularly deep, with the top 6-8 offering plenty of production for fantasy owners, so much so, that the former top fantasy second baseman, Robinson Cano, ranks third in my AL-only rankings. I know I am lower on him than most others, but age seems to be creeping up on him, as evidenced by his dismal second half last season.
The top seven second baseman in my rankings below offer double digit home run and stolen base skills, so you have your pick of Jose Altuve, who does everything well, Brian Dozier who has 20 home run power, scores loads of runs and steals some bags too, and "old man" Dustin Pedroia, who vows to run more in 2016 and hits atop one of the best lineups in baseball.
If power is what you are looking for from your second baseman, then the AL has plenty to choose from as Dozier led all second baseman with 28 home runs last season, and Cano ripped 21 of his own, although most came in the second half. All told, there eight AL second baseman who hit 15 or more home runs, and as many as five could reach the 20 home run club in 2016, including Dozier, Cano, Jonathan Schoop, Brett Lawrie and Rogned Odor.
Five AL second baseman scored 80 or more runs last season, including Dozier, Cano, Altuve, Ian Kinsler and Jason Kipnis, and Pedroia and Odor could easily exceed 80 runs scored in 2016.
The AL is not lacking for good hitting second baseman, as there were ten who hit .270 or higher, and for those of you in OBP leagues, eight AL second baseman reached base at a .340 clip or higher last season.
You can now see that there is plenty to choose from among AL-only second baseman, so if you miss out on Altuve in the second round, you can wait another 6-7 rounds and grab a Pedroia or Lawrie, as I like both heading into March drafts.
