Fantasy Hockey: Breakaways and Benders

Antti Niemi is playing brilliantly.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

In this weekly piece I will provide 5 players below 50% owned who should be looked into owning (Breakaways) and 5 players above 50% owned who are struggling (Benders). This doesn't mean you should drop the Benders but maybe they can ride the pine for a week to get their head back in the game. Generally, I am very skittish about dropping anyone above 90% owned unless they have shown 2+ months of really bad play. My rationale for the selections includes some looking through the box scores but a majority of it is with the eye test, watching the games.

5 Breakaways:

Matthew Tkachuk (LW, Cgy) 37% owned. I put him in here 3 weeks ago and will reiterate, he's on the rise and NHL ready to make a run for the Calder Trophy. He's currently riding a 5 game point streak.

Derek Brassard (C, Ott) 33% owned. 4 goals in his last 6 games as the Senators are showing a renewed push as of late (4 wins in the last 6 games).

Sam Reinhardt (C,RW, Buff) 29% owned. 5 game point streak now has him at 21 points in 35 games. At this pace he will crack 50 points, personally I believe he will crack 60 as he rallies in the second half of the season behind rejuvinated play and healthy Evander Kane and Jack Eichel.

Kyle Turris (C, Ott) 41% owned. 30th in the league in goals as he gets a little better with each game.

Antti Niemi (G, Dall) 43% owned. Dallas wasn't as good as their record indicated last year but they also aren't as bad as their current record indicates, Antti is on the rise playing well lately, ride it.

5 Benders:

Aaron Eckbald (D, Fla) 89% owned. He has 0 points and is a -6 in the last 6 games. By and large he hasn't done much this year, there are better alternatives out there, he can be dropped.

Evgeny Kuznetsov (C, Wash) 90% owned. We are almost half way through the year and he is nowhere near producing where he needs to at 90% owned. I would consider sitting and possibly dropping him.

Gabriel Landeskob (LW, Col) 77% owned. He has made a career of an up year followed by a year where he struggles, I think this is going to be a down year.

Marc Edouard-VLasic (D, SJS) 67% owned. Pickles is struggling at this point, 8 points in 34 games, there are better options on defense.

Ben Bishop (G, TB) 90% owned. Ben was not doing too hot prior to being out for a month. If you aren't in a keeper league I would debate dropping him. He had more loses then wins and wasn't hearly the goalie of last year.
