Fantasy baseball never sleeps! If you are reading this then I need no further explanation.

I joined the faketeams community around the start of the 2016 MLB season. You may know me from my Pure Reliever & Pure Starter rankings, my Top Fantasy Players by Team, or other various content I write during the season. If you are a new reader then welcome and thank you for the read. I plan to continue those columns in 2017, but for the 1st time I have the honor of publishing my early 2017 rankings!

I started fantasy baseball back in 2008 when I was just 16 years old. I’ve been making my own rankings for around 5 years. I use them to help myself in drafts every season and have been pretty successful in doing so. But now I’m able to spread my knowledge of the game with many other amazing people who do the same. I hope to help others with these rankings and also hear feedback as to why my rankings are right/wrong.

My first set of ranking is Pre Winter Meetings. These rankings are bound to change drastically by the start of Spring Training and even more so before Opening Day Night. I’ll start out with a simple Top 250, but please let me know if you’d like a Top 300 or even positional rankings.

*PR stands for 'Player Rater' which is a measure of how good a player was in a standard 5x5 roto league.

Not many surprising names inside the top 25. 3 SP inside the top 10 speaks to 2 different ideals: 1) Offense at the top of the draft is loaded 2) The 3 SP I placed in the top 10 are by far the best at the position. In a year were SP was not as deep as many believed, grabbing one of these sure fire aces at the end of the 1st round would be a draft pick well spent.

Jonathan Villar starts the list of Brewers players I’m high on this season. Villar clearly outperformed all expectations last year and even finished a top 5 overall player in standard roto. I’m not drafting him in the 1st round, probably not the 2nd either, but a 3rd round guy with incredible upside seems worth it.

Andrew McCutchen and David Price are trending in the wrong direction, but still had usable seasons. They also have incredible track records and I certainly understand owners looking past last season. They both move down a few rounds for me. Trades and spring performances could bump these guys up for me, but they could potentially fall as well.

Masahiro Tanaka and Julio Teheran, who ranked #13 and #14 in my Pure Starter rankings for the season, both crack the SP top 20. Teheran will be on a lot of my 2017 fantasy baseball teams. His team is improving and his win total will increase if he continues pitching as well as he did.

The catcher position was as weak as I can remember in 2016. Because of this only 3 make my top 100 and I could easily understand only have Buster Posey in there. Gary Sanchez and Jonathan Lucroy crack my top 100 because I feel confident in their production and also so I make sure to grab one before the catcher pool drops off dramatically.

Chris Davis and Jose Bautista barely make my top 150 overall. They both are coming off a poor 2016 and power is now much easier to find, one big statistic both players produce. The same case can be made for Giancarlo Stanton's poor rank. In Bautista’s case, the team he eventually lands with could move him up, but he wasn’t playing very well last year and is 36 now. He is starting to look like more of a DH only type player and even if he improves his numbers in 2017, they won’t be close to his previous value owners have come to expect.

As we move into the last 10 rounds (picks 151-250) I start to rank players better if they have high upside (like Javier Baez, Aaron Nola, and Matt Moore) and solid veterans who have low variance from season to season (think Jay Bruce, Curtis Granderson, and Francisco Rodriguez) usually fall in the middle of those high upside guys. In these rounds owners are trying to fill out their rosters while either shooting for the moon or limiting their risk.

One player I feel I love more than most is Hernan Perez. He ranks 204 for me. Perez finished the year inside the top 100 overall in standard roto. I fully understand the risk with Perez, but in round 20 or later, he is more than worth it.

Have any questions or feedback about my ranks? Feel free to leave a comment below! Thanks for the read and we will see you following the winter meetings!
