Week 23 of the Fantasy Baseball season is nearing an end. Do you need starting pitching this weekend? If you do I have some options for you to consider.
Friday
Drew Smyly and the Tampa Bay Rays have a Friday night game in Tampa Bay against the Orioles. Since his return from the DL Smyly is 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA, 3.74 FIP and 3.68 xFIP. His per nine numbers of nearly 10 strikeouts per nine 2.25 walks per nine and 1.41 bombs per nine innings have been strong. He'll face an Orioles team with a 23 percent strikeout rate, wOBA of .300 and wRC+ of 87. Smyly is a strong play on Friday night.
Anthony DeSclafani and the Cincinnati Reds are in Milwaukee for a Friday night game against the Brewers. Over his last 6 starts DeSclafani is 2-3 with a 3.41 ERA, 3.01 FIP and xFIP of 2.84. Very good per nine strikeouts (9.41), walks (1.46) and less than 1 bomb per nine innings pitched. He'll face a Brewers team on Friday night with a 20 percent strikeout rate .311 wOBA and wRC+ of 91 AND a right handed rookie Brewers pitcher with a plus 6 ERA named Zach Davies. This should be a good one straight across the board.
Saturday
Carlos Rodon and the Chicago White Sox are in Cleveland for a Saturday evening game with the Indians. Rodon has been solid over his past 5 starts with a 2-2 record with a 2.12 ERA, 4.15 FIP and 3.83 xFIP. Decent per nine innings numbers in strikeouts (7.94), walks (3.71) and served up just over a bomb per nine innings pitched. He'll face an Indians team with a 19 percent strikeout rate, with a .315 wOBA and wRC+ of 100 against lefties. This one is a focus on the strikeouts deal and hopefully the rest will follow suit.
Patrick Corbin and the Arizona Diamonbacks are in San Francisco for a Saturday afternoon game with the Giants. Over his last 6 starts Corbin is 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA, 2.97 FIP and xFIP of 3.03. His per nine numbers are solid; 8.18 strikeouts, 1.36 walks and less than a bomb per nine are all good things to see. He'll face a Giants team that has a 18 percent strikeout rate, .315 wOBA and wRC+ of 104. Hopefully the strikeouts continue and if they do everything else should fall into place on Saturday.
Sunday
Kris Medlen and the Kansas City Royals have a Sunday afternoon game in Detroit against the Tigers. Over his past 5 starts Medlen is 3-1 with a 4.18 ERA, 4.38 FIP and xFIP of 4.18. Decent per nine innings strikeouts (5.1), walks (1.61) and just over 1 bomb per nine innings pitched. The Tigers have 20 percent strikeout rate with a wOBA of .319 and a wRC+ of 101. Medlen has been solid and hopefully he can continue this on Sunday.
John Danks and the White Sox are in Cleveland for a Sunday afternoon game against the Indians. Over his past 5 starts he is 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA, 5.65 FIP and xFIP of 4.06. His per nine strikeouts (6.09), walks (2.12) are decent but he did allow 2.12 bombs per nine during that 5 game stretch. He'll face an Indians team with a 19 percent strikeout rate, with a .315 wOBA and wRC+ of 100 against lefties. This is going to be a toughie but he's had some terrific games this season and hopefully has one more left in the tank.
Good luck this weekend Fantasy Baseball owner!
