Equivalent Fantasy Average: Four-month update

The top 25 right now and the top 25 at this time last year look more similar than we might have guessed.

Frank Victores-USA TODAY Sports

In my end-of-July Equivalent Fantasy Average update this time last year, I marveled at the various pedigrees of the top 25. There were expected names (Mike Trout), minor at-the-time surprises (Anthony Rizzo) and out-of-nowhere guys (Charlie Blackmon).

I decided to look at this year's top 25 this time around and see how it compares. And you know what? It's the same damn list.

Okay, not really. But it's closer than I'd have guessed, with 11 names repeated from last year's through-July top 25 to this:

Top 25 2014 only Top 25 2014 and 2015 Top 25 2015 only

Jose Abreu
Jose Bautista
Michael Brantley
Melky Cabrera
Miguel Cabrera
Edwin Encarnacion
Carlos Gomez
Dee Gordon
Billy Hamilton
Adam Jones
Victor Martinez
Andrew McCutchen
Anthony Rendon
Troy Tulowitzki

Jose Altuve
Charlie Blackmon
Nelson Cruz
Josh Donaldson
Brian Dozier
Todd Frazier
Brett Gardner
Paul Goldschmidt
Anthony Rizzo
Giancarlo Stanton
Mike Trout

Nolan Arenado
Ryan Braun
Lorenzo Cain
Yoenis Cespedes
Bryce Harper
Manny Machado
Starling Marte
J.D. Martinez
A.J. Pollock
Buster Posey
Albert Pujols
Alex Rodriguez
Mark Teixeira
Joey Votto

And even with that, look at the new names on this year's list. Six newcomers (Harper, Braun, Arenado, Pujols, Marte, Posey) were in the Yahoo! preseason top 50, with three more (Martinez, Votto, Cespedes) in the top 100. Based on last year's standards of big surprises (guys outside the top 100), the only big surprises this year were Machado, Pollock, Cain, Teixeira and Rodriguez, and I'd argue that, for a variety of reasons, the only true big surprises this season are Pollock and Cain.

I'm not certain that this means anything. I spent space last week arguing that baseball players' value is less certain on a long-term basis than we often act, whereas this week I'm pointing out that guys are sticking there from one year to another.

Look, it's just an interesting list. This is the four-month update of Equivalent Fantasy Average, the sorting metric I worked out to measure players by their fantasy contributions only, scaled to batting average to make for a more accessible viewing experience. For a breakdown of the method, check the June update, or just read along and see some fancy numbers.

To qualify for the four-month update, players needed a minimum of 200 plate appearances, and they are listed at every position they are eligible in the Yahoo! fantasy game. I've noticed, more than last year, we are seeing more and more utility infielders, guys who end up as quasi-regulars but who qualify at several positions. Brock Holt, Danny Espinosa, Justin Turner, Albert Callaspo, Alexi Amarista. These guys (and several others) qualify all over the infield — and, in some cases, the outfield — leading to increasingly long tables for the infield positions. Most of these guys aren't the best fantasy contributors, but the fact that there are more and more guys who can be moved all over your roster is at least a helpful notion.

Here we go:

  • Remember how good Stephen Vogt was early in the season? After the first two months of EFA, he was at .308, running away with the lead among catchers. He still ranks highly, because of those two months, but in June and July, he hit .216/.288/.310. Hope you sold high.
  • Going in the opposite direction of Vogt is Buster Posey, who rode a .353/.403/.524 in June/July to reclaim his rightly place at the top of the position.
  • Here's how the position goes, more or less: The top 10 largely makes sense. The midrange guys are fine. And then you get to the bottom tier, with names like Jonathan Lucroy, Yan Gomes and Carlos Ruiz, and you just want to cry a little.

  • Paul Goldschmidt's EFA sat at an incredible .361 through the end of May, which I'm pretty sure is the highest number I've encountered since I started doing this. Yeah, he's cooled off since then, because he had to, but dude is still crushing his positionmates.
  • Remember when Mark Teixeira was done as a contributor and just a big contract the Yankees had to wait out? The last two months, he's hit .297/.394/.616 and is beating a heck of a lot of big names in first-base EFA. Really, really didn't see that coming.

  • The top four now is the exact same as the top four two months ago, just mixed up a bit. Dee Gordon's injury has cost him some spots, while the other three did what they do.
  • Brandon Phillips is a top-10 second baseman right now. He has a sub-.700 OPS and only seven home runs. He does, however, have 14 steals, which is twice as many as he had in the last two seasons combined. I don't know either.
  • Robinson Cano was miserable in the first two months, clocking in at 31 at the position. While sitting at 16th at this point isn't special, he did hit .274/.321/.481 in June and July, which isn't special, but is at least acceptable for a once-superstar.
  • Just crowd-sourcing here: Y'all think there's anything left for Chase Utley?

  • The rankings are largely the same, but the last two months did see Josh Donaldson and Todd Frazier come back to the back a bit, as Donaldson was at .340 after May and Frazier was at .329.
  • The fact that Alex Rodriguez, Kris Bryant and Justin Turner are all top-10 third basemen is incredible, and all three for different reasons.
  • I'm writing this Monday night, seeing Adrian Beltre 35th at the position as of the July 31 games, and wondering where he'd be if I had stretched the numbers through his Monday cycle.

  • Troy Tulowitzki was 11th at the position two months ago, at .264. He hit .320/.391/.503 with nine homers over those two months. Tulo is still Tulo.
  • Jung-ho Kang, y'all. He didn't get a lot of playing time early in the season, but with injuries to Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer and increased production on his own, Kang hit .305/.380/.463 in 50 games over those two months, and he's now top 10 at the position.
  • Marcus Semien might as well have retired after May. He was hitting .283/.326/.444 then, sitting fourth at the position. Since then, he's hit .199/.246/.281, dropped to 25th at shortstop, and frankly, if I were Oakland I'd be considering sending him down. It's not like his defense is good enough to support his playing time.

  • I don't even care, y'all, seeing Mike Trout and Bryce Harper 1-2 atop the position — and well ahead of No. 3 — is freaking cool.
  • There are some mildly surprising names atop the position at outfield — I mentioned Pollock and Cain earlier — but the first big surprise is Gerardo Parra at 22. Parra is having a career season, and Baltimore picked him up for basically nothing. I have no idea if he'll continue it, but man.
  • Joc Pederson hit .197/.314/.383 in June and July. Look, no matter how his season finishes up, he's going to have had a great rookie season, but this is not the same hitter we saw the first two months.
  • At the end of May, Melky Cabrera was hitting .241/.280/.276. He didn't end June much better. But his July, y'all. Dude hit .369/.393/.631. He had 20 hits in just the last 10 days of the month. Suddenly, his season isn't so bad.
  • Remember once upon a time, when I said Matt Joyce would be a sleeper pick for this season? Literally, the only qualified hitter in all of baseball who has a lower EFA than him is Tampa Bay catcher Rene Rivera, who isn't even supposed to hit. Man, did Joyce fall apart.
