So, in my mind, Joey Gallo is a lot like Raven-Symone.
...
Just kidding, I'm not doing that again this week. (I could totally make that argument, though, if you want.)
No, this week it's time for an update on Equivalent Fantasy Average. Normally, in this space, I just link to former pieces on the subject for an explanation, but (a) it evolved over time, and (b) it's been a long time, so I'm going to dive in for a real explainer before hitting the numbers.
Stats are great. I like stats. I also think they can be pretty user-unfriendly. When you see a dozen different acronyms and number standards, they can blend in together. I get that batting average is outdated as far as an evaluation tool goes, but it's still very handy as an aesthetic property (i.e., .300 looks nice, .200 looks far less nice, and just about everyone understands that). So a year and change ago, I set out to develop a sorting metric for fantasy players that would be scaled to batting average. Basically, it's a single number to rank players based on fantasy contributions, but instead of, for example, ESPN's Player Rater, which assigns players a number that simple attaches to nothing at all in my brain, these numbers look like a batting average. It's just prettier.
To calculate EFA, then, I figured out the standard deviation across every fantasy statistic (this is just for hitters, and I'm using standard 5x5 fantasy; I could calculate similar EFAs for hitters in any shape or form of league if need be). From there, it was simply a matter of figuring out how many standard deviations each player was above or below the mean in each category and translating that to the equivalent above or below the mean batting average.
That's complicated. Here, with examples, is an excerpt from my original post on the subject, before EFA even had a name:
For example, Joey Votto scored 101 runs last year, while the average 300-PA guy scored 65.7 with a standard deviation of 18.05. That puts Votto slightly less than 2 SDs better than the mean in runs scored. The same number of SDs better than the mean batting average (.266) would give Votto a .324, so his "runs scored batting average" - and yes I have to work on a name for that - would be .324. He scored a .294 in home runs, a .280 in RBI, a .258 in stolen bases, and of course he had a .305 batting average. Since all five categories count the same in fantasy, then, it's as simple as averaging the five contributions, and in fantasy in 2013, Joey Votto was a .292 player.
So that's Equivalent Fantasy Average. It cuts away non-fantasy production and narratives and boils guys down to only how they help (or don't) in our game. For this first look of the season, two months in, every hitter with at least 100 plate appearances through the end of May qualified. That's 269 players. I also calculated it at each position, using players everywhere they qualify in the Yahoo! game. That meant that some guys — Brock Holt — show up a whole bunch of times in the charts below, and in some cases the numbers differ. This is because players' EFAs are not based only on their stats, but also on how those stats relate to their competitors. A guy who holds up well against catchers might not look as good against first basemen, so the EFAs will be a bit different.
Below I have the charts for every position, with the overall EFA chart at the end. After each position I offer some thoughts on what's going on there (scroll down for some serious WTF-ing about Brandon Crawford, if that's your bag).

- Russell Martin has come on of late after an awful first few weeks, as has Evan Gattis. Buster Posey is always around. But man, catcher is all about Stephen Vogt so far this year. We get down to the .260s in a hurry.
- I've been talking up Nick Hundley since the very minute he signed with Colorado, so, you know, definitely going to mention here how good he's looked.
- I mentioned my worries about Yadier Molina a few weeks ago; he has no business being rostered in 10-team leagues at this point, and maybe not 12-teamers.
- Player not on this list I could see having an impact? I'm going to sound like a broken record, but Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Tuffy Gosewisch is done for the year now with an ACL tear, but even absent that, he's bad, and Saltalamacchia is ... well, less bad.

- Dude, Paul Goldschmidt. That's nasty. That's the single highest EFA number I've ever seen, and I invented the damn sorting tool.
- I mean, obviously, if you have Todd Frazier, you need to be using him at third base. But the fact that a third base-eligible guy is performing so well among first basemen is something else.
- You want an explanation for the Royals' success so far? Two different Kansas City guys in the top 10 at first base certainly goes a long way (love ya, Eric Hosmer).
- Remember how quickly catcher dropped off? We've got guys like Logan Forsythe — who ended May at .291/.369/.465 — barely in the top twenty-five at first base. Brandon Belt, who has a legitimate argument as an All-Star, barely squeaks into the position's top 20. Start a first baseman. Find another to play third. Find another as your corner infielder. Play another as your DH. All first basemen everywhere.

- Speed certainly is handy. Dee Gordon isn't even that great a base-stealer — 77 percent career, which is good but not spectacular — but when he runs as much as he does, and his speed is getting him on base as often as it is, you live with the occasional caught stealing. That primary skill keeps him atop the position.
- If I had done this update three weeks ago, I'm betting Jimmy Paredes would've been even higher. The slump has started. Hope you sold high. Sorry for raining on your Paredes.
- Second base holds largely to form here, with the bigger names at the top, and increasingly "who?" names further down. With one big exception: No. 31 among second basemen in fantasy contributions a full third of the way through the season is Robinson Cano of all people. You have to assume he'll improve the rest of the way, but that's not fun to see.
- This certainly paints a picture of how overwhelmed Rougned Odor was before he got sent down.

- Remember how Paul Goldschmidt looked at first base? Josh Donaldson isn't doing that well, but holy crap is he dominant. Certainly makes my "avoid Josh Donaldson" talk in the preseason look pretty good. Sigh.
- Kris Bryant is sixth at the position. That's impressive as hell.
- Alex Rodriguez is eighth at the position. That's also impressive as hell, but for, like, opposite reasons.
- Aramis Ramirez has announced his retirement for the end of the season, but man, his numbers are bad. Might be one of those year-too-late situations.
- It was fun how people thought Casey McGehee would actually be a good investment for a minute there.

- Brandon Crawford? Really, that Brandon Crawford? What the hell?
- I mean, Hanley Ramirez and Jhonny Peralta totally make sense near the top of shortstops. But Zack Cozart? Andrelton Simmons? Adeiny Hechavarria? What in the world has happened to this position? Are they really going to have me longing for the days of Derek Jeter?
- With those names near the top, names like Elvis Andrus (18), Ian Desmond (22) and Xander Bogaerts (23) are ridiculously frustrating.
- As bad as Troy Tulowitzki has been by his standards, he only falls to 11th at the position, which tells you more about shortstops than it does about Tulowitzki.
- Seriously, Brandon Crawford?

- And then there's Bryce Harper. Seriously, considering where they were drafted, it is absolutely plausible someone drafted Paul Goldschmidt in the first round, Josh Donaldson in the second and Harper in the third. I want to find that person and just watch a fantasy stat-tracker with him or her.
- A.J. Pollock is a really interesting case. He doesn't really show up high on many leaderboards (fifth in steals, 12th in runs, that's about it), but he's doing enough everywhere that his overall value stays high. He's basically Brett Gardner minus a few years. Honestly, I didn't even realize how good a season he was having until I did this.
- Remember when we were worried about Andrew McCutchen? Lol, we dumb.
- Yes, I have Cameron Maybin on one of my fantasy teams, because I always have Cameron Maybin on one of my fantasy teams. So yes, I've been paying attention to this and I love it.
- Delino DeShields Jr. has been amazing. He started to look like a bust in the Houston farm system last year, but Texas took a chance on him, and he's been tremendous so far. You have to expect some regression, but this is a 22-year-old rookie batting leadoff for a potent offense, and no one saw that coming.
- Poor Grady Sizemore. Doesn't even have a team anymore. Just gets a "N/A" in the team column.
