These starting pitchers got to 2 strike counts on hitters within 3 pitches most often

Getting to 2 strikes quickly is good, and these pitchers did it best.

Eno Sarris of FanGraphs/ESPN posted an article yesterday about Jordan Zimmermann's elite ability to quickly get to two strike counts on hitters (go click on that link here). Eno shed light on the fact that this is not something that is talked about a whole lot, but is an important trait for a pitcher to have.

So, to build on that theme, here is a leaderboard of starting pitchers who get to two strike counts within three pitches most often, a stat called "2 of first 3 pitches for strikes rate", via Inside Edge scouting service. League average on this stat is 63%.

1. Max Scherzer, 80%

2. Wei-Yin Chen, 74%

3. Jordan Zimmermann, 74%

4. Phil Hughes, 73%

5. John Lackey, 73%

6. David Price, 72%

7. Chris Sale, 72%

8. Stephen Strasburg, 72%

9. Madison Bumgarner, 71%

10. Bartolo Colon, 71%

11. Jacob deGrom, 71%

12. Clayton Kershaw, 71%

13. Carlos Carrasco, 70%

14. Michael Pineda, 70%

15. Jose Quintana, 70%

16. Matt Harvey, 69%

17. Hisashi Iwakuma, 69%

18. Erasmo Ramirez, 69%

19. Taijuan Walker, 69%

20. Chris Archer, 68%

21. Felix Hernandez, 68%

22. Corey Kluber, 68%

23. Jeff Samardzija, 68%

24. Johnny Cueto, 67%

25. Drew Hutchison, 67%

What stands out from that leaderboard is how many high level starting pitchers are on it. Scherzer, Kershaw, Bumgarner, deGrom, Price, Sale, Kluber, Harvey, Archer, King Felix...

What also stands out is how Max Scherzer is far and away the best at this. Combined with Scherzer's wipe out stuff, it's easy to see why his strikeout rate is over 30%.

To give the other side, here is a leaderboard of the bottom 25 starting pitchers at this stat:

1. Carlos Rodon, 52%

2. Yovani Gallardo, 55%

3. Chris Heston, 55%
