FanDuel NBA DFS volatile picks for December 20th

1 risky pick at every position...

I've scoured the league, and I thought I'd identify some of the riskiest picks today.

It'll give you another perspective to consider, knowing that opportunity often comes with risk...

DFS is always uncertain, but these players are some of the riskiest.

How lucky are you feeling just before Christmas?

We begin.

Kyrie Irving, CLE, PG ($7900)

Kyrie Irving is making his long-awaited season debut against the terrible Philadelphia 76ers today. After missing months, how much of an impact will Kyrie be able to make? The smart money says to give him a few days before you start inserting him into your DFS lineup, but we're talking about one of the best players in the NBA... Throw in a historically terrible team, and Kyrie could pick up exactly where he left off: which is 1st round value.

Gerald Green, MIA, SG ($3900)

Gerald has been more up than down lately, but he's as volatile as it gets in the NBA. After years of being nothing more than a dunker, Gerald put together 2 quality seasons with the Phoenix Suns. He's been very inconsistent this season, but hasn't scored less than 13 points in a game the last 5 games (dropped 20 twice). He could easily score 5 points on 2/10 shooting today - or he could drop 40. He doesn't do much more than score, but his upside in that particular category is through the roof... Volatility, thy name is Green.

Robert Covington, PHI, SF ($6000)

At some points this season, Robert Covington has looked like a 1st round Fantasy Basketball talent. When clicking on all cylinders, he contributes in every single category - and does crazy things like getting 7 steals in a single game (twice!). What did he do last game? 3 points and 4 fouls in 15 embarrassing minutes on the floor. As for today? I have absolutely no idea. He's pretty expensive for such risk, but you're talking about a guy who could do something crazy like 32 points, 6 3PM, 8 REB, 4 AST, 5 STL & 3 BLK. He does things like that. It's crazy. He could also do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. He's as wild as it gets, and embodies volatility like Allen Iverson embodied swag...

John Henson, MIL, PF ($3500)

There are 2 John Hensons. The first one did this 2 games ago: 10 points, 5/8 FG, 8 REB, 3 BLK. The second one did this last game: 0 points, 3 fouls, 2 minutes played. This is getting stupid. The guy is getting 1.5 blocks/game this season IN FIFTEEN MINUTES ON THE FLOOR. He has all the athleticism/talent in the world, but has yet to figure out the mental part of the NBA game... It's certainly possible he NEVER figures out the mental part of the game, so he'll likely continue to be an enigma to those of us in the stats analysis game... As for today, I'm scratching my head. He's cheap though - if that's a factor for you...

Karl-Anthony Towns, MIN, C ($7000)

I went a little crazy. I'll admit it. After KAT's torrid start to the season, I started saying it was a debate between Towns and Anthony Davis for 1st overall pick in a dynasty league. His first 2 games in the NBA looked like this: 21 PPG, 13 REB, 2 BLK, 58.6 FG%. Then the league started scouting him. And this is what he did in November: 13.5 PPG, 8.9 REB, 2.2 BLK, 51.5 FG%. So far in December, he's somewhere in between. Look, this is a quality player - and a future NBA stud. But just how good will he be? It's hard to say. He's been pretty good lately, but he's as likely to score 5 as 25. That's a lot of dough for such uncertainty, but a breakout game could be coming... As sporadically brilliant as he's been, he's only scratching the surface. That's scary & exciting. Could be today. Or not. Welcome to DFS.

So that's 5 guys you should either stay away from or run towards.

You love bad boys, don't you?

Your mama warned you about them.

Exciting, but it always ends badly.

Just ask Charlie Sheen.
