Equivalent Fantasy Average: April wrap-up

A month of the season has gone by; let's see what the fantasy sorting metric has to say about the goings-on so far.

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

For something like a week now, I've been involved in trade talks with my buddy Lindo. The principals had me sending away Adam Wainwright and Billy Hamilton, getting back Carlos Gonzalez and ... someone(s). The trade has grown and shrunk, with guys like Elvis Andrus, Sonny Gray, Max Scherzer, and more being tossed in there at some point.

We never reached an agreement, and at this point I'm reasonably sure the trade's dead. The point, though, is that I've spent a lot of time lately looking at Carlos Gonzalez's stat line for the season to date.

It isn't exactly dominant, not Carlos-esque. He's hitting .241/.293/.454, in line for career worsts in just about every rate stat. Sure, it's a small sample, and sure, odds are he'll improve. And he has hit five homers, so there's that. Those are the reasons why I was interested in him to begin with - when you have the chance to acquire a first-round talent, you gotta give it a heck of a consideration.

Anyway, because I had spent so long looking at his production in things that he controls - as opposed to circumstantial things like runs and RBI - I had it in my mind (rightfully, to be honest) that Gonzalez has been pretty disappointing so far.

Which was why I was so surprised that his EFA through one month of the season was .295.

For the uninitiated, EFA stands for Eqivalent Fantasy Average, a sorting metric I worked up in the offseason to quantify fantasy (and only fantasy) contributions, carving out the chaff. If you want more, check out some of the previous pieces. (I have yet to figure out a decent method for calculating EFA for pitchers *sob*, so I am shame-faced.)

Today, I'm looking at the EFAs so far this season, since the end of April makes for a nice dividing line. (Assuming my life cooperates, I'll do this each month, because arbitrary endpoints!) In previous, full-season EFA examinations, I've used 300 plate appearances as a minimum. So far this season, major league teams have averaged 27 games apiece (entering Thursday), which is exactly 1/6 of the season, which makes 50 plate appearances nigh on perfect for this. Thanks for that, calendar.

Anyway, back to Gonzalez. Yeah, I was thinking he'd struggle in EFA right now. His first month has been rough. But what I failed to consider - but EFA remembers - is that Gonzalez has a lot of circumstantial benefits. He's playing in a lineup with Charlie Blackmon, Troy Tulowitzki, and (when healthy) Michael Cuddyer, among others, meaning Gonzalez will accrue runs and RBI, almost despite himself. As all the sabermetrically inclined sports people have stressed, you shouldn't use contextual stats like those for player evaluations, and they (we) are of course right. But in fantasy, we aren't looking for who would do the best in a neutral ballpark, facing a neutral pitcher, in a neutral lineup. Carlos Gonzalez, with his ballpark and those hitters around him, has been valuable in fantasy even with that .241/.293/.454 slash line.

As I see it, this is the benefit of EFA. It excises all the extraneous details - yeah, Matt Kemp gets dinged in real-world evaluation for having to ply his trade in Chavez Ravine, but in fantasy, that's where he is, and that matters - and cuts down to exactly what you are looking for in 5x5 fantasy.

The charts that follow offer the individual positions' lists of EFA, with my thoughts after each. At the end is the overall list. It will take me a long time to type and you won't read every line. You ungrateful wenches. Anyway, enjoy:

Even with a .172 average, Alvarez has been okay, but mostly because the position has been rough after Donaldson and Rendon. ... Not a good time to be named Mike, with Aviles, Olt, and Moustakas all off to cold starts. ... If you want to claim Blackmon is the biggest shock at outfield, I won't argue with you, but personally, I thought Morse was just done for. ... EFA really shows how we undervalue stolen bases, as guys like Davis and Bonifacio - and even Young - don't get nearly the credit they might deserve. ... I nominated Hamilton early in every auction or auction mock I entered, just out of a sense of "Let's see what happens," and he always went for a decently high price. It's been a roundabout path, but he's provided a reasonable return so far. ... Puig has actually been better than I thought he'd be, but his fantasy-specific numbers haven't blown anyone away (because I did the calculations before his dominant Thursday doubleheader). ... The shine is sure off of Sizemore, but it's nice he's been healthy. ... Springer has not quite been Troutian so far.
