ADP Rankings Analysis: Second Base

Ray takes a look at the recent average draft position (ADP) data from NFBC for second basemen. Let's see how the rankings from the Fake Teams writers fared vs the NFBC ADP rankings.

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Today we take a look at the average draft position data for second basemen to see how our consensus second base rankings fared against the NFBC (National Fantasy Baseball Championship) ADP rankings courtesy of NESN.com.

Along with the NFBC ADP rankings, the NESN site also provides the Max Pick and Min Pick data, which tells readers where the player was drafted the highest and the lowest thus far in the NFBC drafts.

In addition, I thought it would be helpful to include the Fake Teams consensus second base rankings in the table below to see how close the collective rankings of eight independent writers fared vs the NFBC ADP rankings. The NFBC rankings are collected from all the NFBC drafts that have completed to date. Each of the NBC drafts consist of 15 teams and 30 rounds, so the data is a good barometer for where players are being drafted.

Quick Thoughts

Our consensus rankings agree with the NFBC ADP rankings for the top six second baseman, but after that, things begin to differ. Fake Teams writers are less optimistic on Jose Altuve and Jedd Gyorko, and more optimistic on Chase Utley and Anthony Rendon.

The range of the min and max picks for Robinson Cano indicates fantasy owners are less comfortable drafting him in the first round this season, which I am in agreement with. His ADP sits a 9.21 as of this writing, which I imagine is lower than last season.

Fake Teams writers and the NFBC ADP rankings are in agreement on Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter, ranking him as the 4th best fantasy second baseman for 2014, yet I think we will look back and say we were a little too optimistic on him come midseason. Just a hunch.

There is a large discrepancy in the ranking for Dodgers second baseman Alexander Guerrero, as the Fake Teams writers rank him as the 25th best second baseman this season, while the NFBC drafters like him as a top 20 second baseman. I lean toward the NFBC ranking here, actually, as I think he will outperform his draft day value this season.

After the top 20 or so second baseman, you can throw about 15 guys into a hat and probably get similar production this season. But a few that I like are Dan Uggla, Nick Franklin and Scooter Gennett, as Uggla is a nice bounce back candidate. Franklin just needs a change of scenery and Gennett appears to have the starting job in Milwaukee.
