Week 9 went almost as expected. Andrew Luck, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning all ended up in the top-5. Ben Roethlisberger topped the list after throwing back-to-back 6 touchdown games. And, of course, the final quarterback that finished within that top-5 group was none other than.....Ryan Tannehill?!
Tannehill has now finished as the #4 fantasy quarterback in weekly standard scoring in two out of the last three weeks. After being called out by Head Coach, Joe Philbin, and rumors of being replaced by backup Matt Moore were beginning to surface earlier in the season, Tannehill has stepped up and played well. He is currently ranked as a QB1 in standard 12-team leagues. But will this success continue?
After a great win against the Chargers, Tannehill is rewarded with a trip to Detroit to face the best defense in the NFL. After that test, he then has to face a divisional rival and another tough defense in the Buffalo Bills. I anticipate that his passing numbers will sharply decline during this gauntlet of matchups. However, if he can make it through this brief stretch, the schedule will lighten up a bit as the Dolphins face the Broncos, Jets, Ravens, Patriots, then the Vikings in the all-important Week 16.
If Tannehill can weather the storm for the next couple weeks and continue to average close to 50 rushing yards per game, he should continue to produce as a mid to low-QB1 and should be a nice streaming option for teams down the stretch.
Other streaming options may surface as teams are forced to make changes at the quarterback position. Mark Sanchez will take over for the injured Nick Foles. I believe that Eagles will not lose a step with Sanchez under center. There were many that would say that Sanchez has outperformed Foles ever since training camp. Like with Foles this season, Sanchez will continue to have turnovers, but in a Chip Kelly fast-paced system, there will be plenty of opportunities to connect with any of the abundance of Eagles' weapons for explosive plays. With more mobility than Foles, Sanchez should at least be able to continue the fantasy production that we have seen from Foles but could be much better with a very favorable schedule for the rest of the season.
Michael Vick and Zach Mettenberger will continue to start for their respective teams as they try to win a role for the future. Vick deserves some consideration this week facing the Steelers without Troy Polamalu and Ryan Shazier as he continues to gain a great rapport with Percy Harvin. Mettenberger, on the other hand, should be avoided this weak with a much less favorable matchup at Baltimore.
Tampa Bay just announced that they will go back to Josh McCown as the starter over Mike Glennon. It didn't work in the beginning of the season, I don't see how it will help now. And there is also plenty of smoke in Houston that they might be willing to move on from Ryan Fitzpatrick during the bye week and turn to Ryan Mallett to see what they have in him. This move will be more intriguing for deep leagues or two-QB leagues as Mallett's elite arm strength matched with DeAndre Hopkins' downfield ability could lead to some bigger passing numbers for the Houston offense.
Due to all these changes and another week with many top quarterbacks on bye this week. Many fantasy owners will be scrambling to find help at the position during this critical point in the season when it begins to become clear if your team has a shot for the fantasy playoffs or not.
