Minor League Level Review (AAA): Could Olt's Struggles Be Vision-Related?

Jason Hunt takes a look at the action from the two AAA leagues in the past two weeks, including recent callups Nolan Arenado, Jonathan Pettibone, as well as top prospects Sonny Gray, Zach Wheeler, Mike Olt, and others in this weekend's Minor League Level Review.

USA TODAY Sports

Every other Sunday, I will be taking a quick look at some of the top prospects at the AAA level, including their stats for for the season, and if anything stands out about the performance. The season stats may not always tell us the whole story, but there are usually also some updates on how they are doing these things as opposed to just the numbers themselves. All statistics are courtesy of Fangraphs.com, and since I am out of town this weekend, are through the games of Thursday, 5/2/13.

  • Word came down earlier in the week that Mike Olt would be checked out to see if he was having any vision problems, which would definitely help explain the poor start he is off to.
  • Ray wrote about the possibility of Dee Gordon being moved to second base on Friday, and it would definitely open a much cleaner path to the Majors for him given the current roster construction of the team. It could also lead him to being a trade candidate, which we discussed briefly in the comments.
  • A follower of mine on Twitter requested a profile of Stefen Romero, which will be up on Monday morning.
  • Arenado was called up last Sunday to the Majors, while Jackie Bradley was sent down to AAA with the return of David Ortiz to the lineup.
  • Travis d'Arnaud is out for another 6 weeks or so with a fractured left foot.

  • There was news within BA's Prospect Notebook for Wednesday that Mets' top prospect Zack Wheeler had corrected a mechanical glitch, which has led to improved success in his recent starts.
  • Sonny Gray threw a complete game on Thursday against Fresno, striking out 6 and allowing just 4 hits and 2 walks, easily his best start of the year so far. If they keep losing starting pitchers in Oakland, they could call up Gray possibly.
  • Mark Montgomery seems likely to get the call to go to New York to work out of the bullpen soon, especially given the performance so far at AAA.
  • Trevor Bauer started on May 1st for the Indians, walking 6 and striking out 5 in 5 innings of shutout baseball, after which he was promptly sent back to AAA. It sounded like he was tweaking with his starting spot on the rubber during the start, which could be a part of the reason why he walked as many in 5 innings as he had all season in the minors.
