Minor League Level Review (AA): Singleton and Stroman Return, Miller and Gausman Promoted

Jason Hunt takes a look at some of the top prospects in the three AA leagues, including Jonathan Singleton, Marcus Stroman, Yasiel Puig, and many more in this week's installment of Minor League Level Review.

USA TODAY Sports

Every other Wednesday, I will be taking a quick look at some of the top prospects at the AA level, including their stats for the season so far. All statistics are courtesy of Fangraphs.com, and are through the games of Monday, 5/27/13. Have a question about a specific prospect or player? Post it in the comments and we'll discuss it.

  • We saw Brad Miller promoted to AAA Tacoma on the 24th, who has appeared in three game at shortstop there so far. The Mariners called up 2B prospect Nick Franklin on Monday, so it is possible we could see Miller in another month or two if Brendan Ryan starts to falter with the bat again.
  • There were rumors that Yasiel Puig and Joc Pederson might be called up (read: manager Don Mattingly suggested it as a possibility), but unless he knows something about the current outfielders' ability to play the infield that the rest of us don't, it doesn't really seem to fit particularly well. Puig hit two home runs on Sunday, raising his total to eight on the season. I am hoping that he doesn't get skipped over AAA, as Albuquerque doesn't come through Sacramento until late July/early August.
  • Mike Newman of Fangraphs also provided an in-person account about Puig last week as well, noting that he may be ready from a baseball standpoint, but not from a maturity one.
  • It seems more and more likely that Miles Head was a California league product, as he continues to struggle at the AA level. I'll have to look into it a bit more to see if something stands out, but it is definitely concerning.
  • Astros' 1B prospect Jonathan Singleton was activated on Tuesday, after serving his 50-game suspension. He could move up to AAA before too long, and could possibly see a cup of coffee at the end of the season.

  • We saw Kevin Gausman and Sean Nolin promoted to the Majors, with Nolin there just for a spot start while Gausman appears like he will be up for the foreseeable future.
  • David Laurila of Fangraphs had a Q&A with Blue Jays' pitching prospect Marcus Stroman, who debuted recently after serving his 50-game suspension.
  • Over the Monster had an update last week on the Red Sox' AA affiliate, the Portland Sea Dogs, with notes on Workman, Barnes, and Drake Britton.
  • Rafael Montero was sent to AAA to make a spot start, throwing 6 2/3 innings, striking out 5, allowing 4 hits and 2 earned runs with a walk. It makes sense to me that Montero could be moved to AAA whenever the Mets decide to call up Zack Wheeler to the big club.
  • Brian Flynn was also promoted to AAA, and while New Orleans was here in Sacramento last week, I didn't get a chance to see him. Frankly, the talent level on that AAA club is what you would expect: not good.
  • Nate Karns was called up for the start on Tuesday night against Baltimore, and while I didn't get to see most of the start, I did happen to turn it on unfortunately as he gave up homeruns to Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy.
