John Axford out as Brewers closer; Jim Henderson his likely replacement

Brewers closer John Axford had a weekend to forget and now he is out as the Brewers closer.

Charles LeClaire-US PRESSWIRE

Brewer beat writer Tom Haudricourt reported about an hour ago that John Axford appears to be out as the team's closer, with Jim Henderson the likely favorite to take over the role. Here is an excerpt from Haudricourt's piece:

Asked if there was a closing situation today against the Cubs if he would use Axford, Roenicke said, "I need to have a discussion with 'Ax' on what we plan to do. So, I really can't give you an answer until I talk to him."

Normally, when a manager says somethng like that, it means he hasn't talked to the player yet about making a change and therefore isn't ready to tell the media.

I mentioned in this morning's Roto Roundup that there could be a change on the horizon in Milwaukee, but I didn't think it would happen so quickly. Then again, Axford has given up a home run in each of his three relief appearances this season, and owns an ERA north of 20.00.

In addiition, Kevin Nielsen wrote this article on Axford's likely replacement, Jim Henderson, yesterday, so make sure you check it out.

Go out and grab Jim Henderson in all leagues if he is available. I will update my Closer Rankings to reflect this change later this week.
