Gaborik Traded To Blue Jackets; What’s The Fantasy Impact?

Right Winger Marian Gaborik has been traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets after falling out of favor with coach John Tortorella. The question is, will the move give Gaborik’s fantasy value a boost down the stretch?

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

With just 9 goals and 10 assists for 19 points and a minus-8 rating, the Slovakian goal scorer is light years a way from his 50 goal scoring days with the Minnesota wild. As bad as his season has been, he's been much worse over the last six weeks of the season, notching just two goals since scoring on Valentine's Day.

With that kind of stat line, it's easy to see why the people of New York and the Rangers as an organization needed a change and pounced on the opportunity to ship the winger to Columbus in the last hours leading up to the trade deadline on Wednesday.

Forwards Derick Brassard, Derek Dorsett and defenseman John Moore will go the other way to New York, adding more toughness and character to a Rangers team that traded for forward Ryan Clowe yesterday.

Without a doubt, Gaborik is the key piece to the deal and Jackets will probably start him on the team's top line with Vinny Prospal on the opposite wing and the newly re-signed Mark Letestu at center. Columbus is in desperate need of goal scoring and a change of scenery will hopefully get the Jackets in the playoffs and give Gabby's fantasy owners the value they expected when they drafted the sniper. Owners of Letestu and Prospal should be excited too!
